Qualification Details

The ideal candidate:

  • has documented experimental skills within classical microbiological techniques and with molecular microbiology
  • has strong experience working with qPCR, RT-qPCR and sequencing
  • has experience in sampling/handling experimental animals (fish) and challenge models using infectious agents
  • has experience in working with diagnostics methods or in a diagnostic laboratory
  • is interested in implementing new techniques and it is able to do so in a self-sufficient manner

Previous experience working with R. salmoninarum would be an advantage, as well as previous experience working with experimental animals.

The project involves strong collaboration with other members of the group (veterinarians, molecular biologists, animal caretakers, lab technicians etc.) as well as with academic and industrial partners, therefore good communications skills are required.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Part of this PhD project includes the establishment of a challenge model to study the pathogenicity of the gram positive bacterium Renibacterium salmoninarum in rainbow trout; and assessing different parameters such as temperature and water quality in the development of bacterial kidney disease. Host-pathogen interaction and gene expression in response to infection will be studied. The candidate is expected to be comfortable working with experimental animals, as well as being able to implement or develop novel diagnostic methods for detection and genetic characterization of R. salmoninarum, including studies of molecular tracing of the different variants co-occurring in Denmark.

The Section for Fish and Shellfish Diseases conducts research on host-pathogen interactions, disease prophylaxis and pathogen characterization. The group gives research-based advice and is at the forefront on the development of diagnostic tools and preventive measures of diseases in fish, bivalves and crustaceans.

The Section is appointed as the European Union reference laboratory for Fish and crustacean Diseases and as the World Organisation for Animal Health reference laboratory for the fish disease viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS).
