Qualification Details

The candidate should have a Master’s degree (120 ECTS points; or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree) in chemistry with a focus on synthetic inorganic or organic chemistry. Experience with crystallography, spectroscopy in inorganic chemistry, and handling of air- and moisture sensitive compounds are considered advantageous. Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants, who seek to be among the brightest in their field and do science at the highest international level, will be considered.

The assessment of the candidates will be made by Associate Professor Kasper S. Pedersen.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The PhD project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new types of magnetically frustrated metal-organic network structures. This includes also the detailed elucidation of structural and physical properties, and electronic structures. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Laboratory for Quantum Magnetism at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). The candidate will spend a significant part of the project period at EPFL and at international large-scale facilities (synchrotron and neutron sources) in Europe and in the US. The project will have significant impact on the understanding of chemical design of frustrated magnetism and novel magnetic ground states in metal-organic materials. Active dissemination of the obtained results, in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences, is an integral part of the job.
