Qualification Details

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in experimental reservoir physics. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before April 1st, 2022. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Experimental experience with porous media flow is a requirement. Good skills in performing and interpreting core floods are advantageous.
  • Experience handling gas at elevated pressure conditions is a requirement.
  • Experience with flow experiments at elevated pressure and temperature conditions is an advantage.
  • An interest in in-situ visualization and experience from core floods with in-situ imaging and/or pore scale visualization are advantages.
  • An interest in microbiology and experience from microbe visualization are advantages.
  • Experience in image processing is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner.
  • The applicant must demonstrate good collaborative skills and thrive in a cross-disciplinary research team.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Assessing the efficiency of short-term energy storage in the subsurface requires new understanding of physical processes and determining mechanisms during storage and withdrawal cycles. Multiscale flow tests are valuable tools for quantification of storage efficiency; and can provide foundation for reliable modeling capabilities. Coupling pore- and core scale flow experiments with cutting-edge visualization technology will improve the quantification and understanding of prevailing flow mechanisms and provide new insight into subsurface processes. For coupling of flow and biogeochemistry during hydrogen storage it is especially important to develop accurate multi-physics models.

The PhD candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research team focusing on short-cycle energy storage, and the impacts of fluid-fluid/fluid-rock processes and biochemical interactions on storage efficiency. The tasks of the PhD candidate will mainly be experimental, and include:

  • Developing robust procedures for short-term energy storage assessment at relevant storage conditions
  • In-situ visualization of flow processes in porous media on multiple length scales

Image processing and data handling are important parts of the work. The results of experiments with a potentially high degree of complexity will serve as input to numerical models across work packages in the CSSR.
