Qualification Details

Applicants must have an MSc in Chemical Engineering, Sustainable Process Engineering, Engineering Chemistry, Materials Engineering or comparable.

Knowledge of metallurgical processes and mineral processing, experience of high-temperature experimental work and knowledge of reaction kinetics and thermodynamic modelling is desirable. Since much of the work will be done in close collaboration with other researchers and industry partners, where consideration must be given to practical conditions, the ability to work collaboratively in larger groups is an important asset. Applicants must have good proficiency in written and spoken English.

Responsibilities/Job Description

We are looking for a PhD student in Process Metallurgy who, together with senior researchers, will conduct research studies within the field of ​​"Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries".  The doctoral position will be part of the ongoing projects relevant to recycling of End-of-life Lithium-ion batteries. These projects are a collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, researchers at other national and international research institutes and universities as well as industrial partners. We “the Process metallurgy research group” conduct research and education within the subject areas iron and steel metallurgy, base metal metallurgy, hydrometallurgy and recovery of minerals and metals from residual and end-of life products. The division has access to well-equipped laboratories for hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical studies, materials characterization and thermodynamics.

Subject description

Process metallurgy encompasses sustainable extraction of metals from primary and secondary raw materials, based on both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods.


As a PhD student you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies.

In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects.

The research may include experimental work in the form of leaching studies and experimental high temperatures in lab scale, thermodynamic calculations and characterization of materials using various analytical equipment including XRD, SEM, LOM, etc. Participation in industry investigations may be included.

The postgraduate studies covers 4 years at 100%. The work is mainly carried out at Luleå University of Technology in Luleå, but experiments/investigations with industrial partners can also be included.

About the Project

The purpose of the project is to develop new knowledge to efficiently recover valuable metals from spent lithium ion batteries in an environmentally and economically sustainable way. After their end-of-life, Lithium-ion batteries are collected, deactivated and disintegrated producing several streams including plastics, copper, aluminium and electrode powder (black mass). Plastics are used in energy production and metals are recovered. Black mass often consists of Li metal oxides together with graphite, Al, Cu and residual organic materials. Recycling of such black mass is resource inefficient and challenging. A thermal treatment step has to be introduced in the beginning to shorten and improve the different downstream processes. Developing an innovative thermal treatment step is the core of the present study.

The project will be based on experimental work on a lab scale, characterization of materials, theoretical calculations using thermodynamic modeling tools and mapping of materials and methods via literature and communication with experienced engineers and researchers at industry and research organizations. The project will be run in close collaboration with industry.

Employment as a PhD student is limited to 4 years, teaching and other department duties may be added with max 20%.
