Qualification Details

We seek highly motivated, early-career researcher with a MSc degree on Chemical Engineering, Chemical Science and Technology, Nanomaterials, and/or Material Sciences. Programing experience (MATLAB, Python) and process simulation (e.g. Aspen +) is highly valued. Our ideal candidate enjoys working in an internationally and multi-disciplinary team contributing to the research of team-members. We welcome strong interpersonal skills and interest in sharing knowledge at conferences and meetings. Proficiency in English is required, both spoken and written.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Catalytic Processes and Materials (CPM) group, from the faculty of Science and Technology (S&T) of the University of Twente, is searching for a PhD candidate for the LNG-ZERO project. The exhaust gasses of the LNG-engines in vessel contain small traces of NOx, which will be trapped in an aqueous solution in the LNG-ZERO project. The resulting aqueous stream contain nitrates and nitrites that must be reduced selectively to molecular nitrogen (N2) before releasing the water into the environment. The candidate for this PhD position will focus on developing new catalysts and reactor concepts for the conversion of nitrates and nitrites in a single step to N2 using hydrogen as reducing agent. Detailed study of the catalyst morphology determining mass transfer, structure-performance relationships, and catalytic performance will serve as steppingstone in selecting the optimal reactor configuration for the on-board system. The candidate for this PhD position should have experience in heterogeneous catalysis, kinetic modelling, and reactor engineering.

The Catalytic Processes and Materials (CPM) group is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology, TNW, at University of Twente. Within CPM we apply fundamental knowledge on molecular reactions and diffusion in/on heterogeneous catalysts for exploration of new catalytic materials, catalytic devices, and processes of relevance for industry and society
