Qualification Details

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in  in mechanical engineering (HVAC), civil/building engineering, measurement technology, physics or other relevant fields
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv/admission

Qualifications in at least two of the following:

  • Strong background in indoor environmental and building energy performance assessment.
  • Previous experience with data acquisition and monitoring systems for thermal/civil engineering or environmental physics.
  • Strong background in experimental measurements of indoor environment parameters, ventilation and energy consumption.
  • Fluent English skills, both in speech and in writing

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Knowledge and first-hand experience with sensing, monitoring and control technology for built environment
  • Competence in ventilation, indoor environment quality and building operation/automation
  • Design and execution of monitoring systems for building energy and indoor environmental performance
  • Familiarity with latest concepts, systems and architectures for IoT, machine learning of indoor environment, monitoring platform and digital-twin in the built environment.
  • Fluency in one or more software language for either general programming (MatLab, Python) or data acquisition (Labview)
  • Knowledge of the relevant international standards concerning the performance assessment/measurement of different phenomena in buildings in the field of energy and indoor environmental performance.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The purpose of this PhD project is to develop, test, and validate long-term monitoring approaches for building envelope components targeting the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and energy performance using living laboratory facilities.

The PhD candidate will primarily work on research activities carried out as part of the research project iClimabuilt. The position will focus on developing, testing and validating new long-term monitoring approaches for the assessment of final prototypes and the demonstration of test cases in living laboratories. For example, a non exhaustive list of duties/tasks to be carried out in this PhD research covers:

  • to collect experiences from previous living laboratory experiments on building envelope systems
  • to define and develop new measurement and monitoring procedures, instrumentation and data acquisition systems suitable for long term monitoring of IEQ and energy performance in living laboratories
  • to verify the long-term monitoring approaches, methodologies and tools by testing them on selected test cases
  • to cooperate with other research groups at partner universities/research institutes for the evaluation and optimisation of the experimental methods
