Qualification Details

You must have a two-year master's degree in semiconductor devices, photonics (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.In addition we expect you to

  • Be fluent in English
  • Have good communication skills to work in close collaboration with international partners
  • Be willing to supervise master and bachelor students
  • Have cleanroom fabrication experience

Responsibilities/Job Description

At DTU Fotonik you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of silicon carbide nanophotonics. We are looking for a strongly self-motivated PhD student to contribute to a FET Open project ‘CMOS compatible and ultrabroad on-chip SiC frequency comb (SiComb)’ coordinated by Associate Professor Haiyan Ou.

The PhD student will work in the wide bandgap semiconductor photonics group led by Associate Professor Haiyan Ou.DTU Fotonik covers all areas of photonics engineering. Photonics engineering has become a key enabling technology for our society and is used, for example, both for our communication infrastructure, for the treatment of diseases in the healthcare sector, and for secure communication on the internet. It has access to the national center DTU Nanolab. The goal of the SiComb project is to demonstrate an on-chip optical frequency comb and apply it to optical communication systems, after exploring and combining the very high nonlinearity and high confinement of silicon carbide waveguides and microrings with the material’s other advantages such as CMOS compatibility, high thermal conductivity and bio-compatibility. The seven partners in the project (DTU, FAU, CNRS, POLITO, MLNX, ALM, and Moverim) comprise the strongest team in Europe covering SiC material growth, device nanofabrication and optical communication application.

Responsibilities and qualifications

You will be in charge of the design, fabrication and characterization of silicon carbide on insulator (SiCOI) devices, in close collaboration with other consortium partners and group members working on material growth and device applications.The candidate is thus expected to

  • Design the SiCOI waveguide devices with desired dispersion and performance
  • Optimize the fabrication process to achieve low-loss waveguides and high quality factor microrings
  • Build the experimental setup to characterize the nonlinearity of SiC waveguides and microrings
  • Simulate and demonstrate frequency comb generation in SiCOI microrings
  • Interact actively with other group members and European partners

Salary and Appointment terms
