Qualification Details

Applicants are expected to have obtained a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant subjects before start of the project.

The successful applicant is expected to possess a good level of knowledge of fluid dynamics, CFD, and turbulence. Having a background (preferably hand-on experience) in use of high fidelity solvers is highly beneficial.

About the Project

The project focuses on methods to reduce frictional drag of turbulent water flows on solid walls. Frictional drag is responsible for major loss of energy efficiency in a variety of fluid and energy-related applications such as ship industry and water networks. Attention is paid particularly to the little understood effect of surface roughness – a factor prevalent in many real-world problems, e.g. due to heavy fouling in water supply pipes and on ship hulls.

The project mainly relies on the use of high fidelity numerical simulations (DNS and LES) to understand the underlying physics of problem and to investigate the performance of different drag reduction techniques on rough walls. The results of the simulations will be used to propose functional solutions in the related applications. Finally, there will be a possibility to examine the numerical results using proof of concept experiments.
