Qualification Details

We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated candidate:

  • Outstanding Master's degree in the field of business administration, (health) economics, econometrics, public health, or similar with a grade point average of at least 5.0 or the equivalent for non-Swiss degrees (corresponds for instance to a 2.0 in DE and AT)
  • Ideally first management consulting or project management experience
  • Result-oriented working style with a high degree of initiative, creativity, and team spirit
  • High motivation and ability to work on multiple projects and topics at the same time
  • Affinity for digital services, business modelling, and start-ups
  • Confident, open, constructive, and engaging communication style internally and externally
  • Basic knowledge of at least one statistical tool (R, stata, SPSS) and high motivation to improve statistical skills
  • Experience in handling large datasets with hospital and/or patient level data is a plus
  • Experience with European and other healthcare systems is a plus
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken; fluent in German is a plus

The School of Medicine (MED-HSG) and the Chair of Healthcare Management were founded very recently in 2020 and are the latest stage of the growth path of the University of St.Gallen. We offer the opportunity to conduct innovative research in an international, multidisciplinary team with high leadership involvement and in a dynamic environment. With our research, we inform health policy makers, payers, as well as clinicians and other providers. We derive implications in the fields of health economics, health care management health systems, and health policy research – always with the goal in mind to improve the quality of care for patients.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Chair of Healthcare Management is a newly funded chair at the School of Medicine.
PhD-candidates will have the opportunity to assist the chair in its strategic growth-path. In addition, PhD-candidates conduct research in the above-mentioned healthcare areas directly informing national decision makers.As PhD-candidate and research assistant, you will:

  • Generate your own research questions and hypotheses and answer and test them with quantitative, empirical methods using large datasets from sickness funds and government entities
  • Prepare high-quality manuscripts for publication in international journals and present your research results at (inter-)national conferences
  • Show initiative and drive your research topics independently and with high motivation
  • Support the team with research proposals and funding pitches
  • Develop your area of expertise by being part of an expert consulting team preparing scientific reports for different players of the healthcare system
  • Support the leadership team with the preparation of new activities such as creating a hub for digital health start-ups
  • Work and communicate effectively with diverse teams in a structured manner and work directly with the leadership team on diverse topics and projects
  • Supervise bachelor and master theses, and student assistants; prepare and accompany lectures
  • Enroll in a PhD-program of the University of St. Gallen: ManagementEconomics and Econometrics or International Affairs and Political Economy possible
