Qualification Details

  • You must have a relevant background in design or a related, relevant field, for example web development
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program.
  • You must have good oral and written communication skills in English.

You must have developed a maximum 5-page project description where you present the project, using the following template. The outline should

  • describe which of the department's strategic areas (one or more) the project is intended to be linked to
  • express a clear understanding of the theoretical foundation and the research and design methods that are intended to be used in the project
  • provide information about the department's scientific staff member(s) who have agreed to be your supervisor(s)

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • experience from work as a designer and/or experience as a research assistant or similar
  • good oral and written communication skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language

Responsibilities/Job Description

The main goal of the position is competence building and doctoral education, and you will be enrolled in the PhD programme in Design.

The candidate will

  • carry out a research project
  • carry out coursework that contains professional and methodological training at doctoral level
  • present own research work at national and international scientific conferences
  • write and defend a PhD dissertation

The Department of Design conducts research at a high international level. As part of this, contact with international research institutions is important. It is therefore desirable that you spend at least one semester at an institution abroad during the employment period. We will facilitate this.

  • CV, certificates and diplomas
  • transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's and master's degrees. If you have not completed the master's degree, you must submit a confirmation that the master's thesis has been submitted.
  • a copy of the master's thesis. If you recently have submitted your master's thesis, you can attach a draft of the thesis. Documentation of a completed master's degree must be presented before taking up the position.
  • name and address of three referees
  • if you have publications or other relevant research work

If all, or parts, of your education has been taken abroad, we also ask you to attach documentation of the scope and quality of your entire education, both bachelor's and master's education, in addition to other higher education. About the Department/Section/Group

Department of design is a relatively small department with extensive research activity of high international standards, and we cover many areas in the field of design. We have divided our research activity into four strategic areas: design for sustainability, social interaction, technology, and form, and you can read more about the four areas here. The department offers the following study programmes: Bachelor in Web Development, Bachelor in Graphic Design, Bachelor in Interaction Design, 5-year Master in Industrial Design (M.Sc.), 2-year Master in Industrial Design and 2-year Master in Interaction Design.

At the Department of Design (ID), there is a vacant PhD position, and we are now looking for committed, curious and ambitious candidates who want to take a PhD in design. The period of employment is three years, with the possibility of a fourth year related to teaching or other relevant assignments. The project to be carried out must be linked to at least one of the department's four strategic areas, and the topic must be relevant to at least one of the department's master's programmes (2- and 5-year Master in Industrial Design and 2-year Master in Interaction design). It may be connected to already ongoing research projects, but this is not a requirement.

You will report to the Head of Department (Trondheim) or Deputy Head of Department (Gjøvik), depending on the place of work.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
