Qualification Details

  • Completed MA degree with a strong academic background in literary studies, drama, cultural history, or relevant field
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree programme, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant  

Preferred selection criteria

  • Excellent reading and writing skills in English
  • Experience in literary research, education, drama, or theatrical studies
  • The proposed project’s academic quality and relevance to the research project “Drama in Language Learning” and the research group ShINE: Shakespeare in Education.

  • Ability to work independently
  • Collaborative skills and ability to participate in academic communities within and across disciplines
  • Academic ability to complete the project and research education requirements within the given time frame
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • Develop and carry out a PhD project on the theme “Drama in Language Learning”
  • Participation in interdisciplinary research and dissemination duties
  • Other duties may arise in discussion with the PhD supervisor

About the Project

The successful candidate will contribute to the project with individual and collaborative research to explore the efficacy of using drama and performance activities in English language learning, particularly in the ESL and multilingual classrooms. The candidate may consider pursuing any project that investigates the didactic benefits of interdisciplinarity in language learning, including such areas as integrating literature, drama, music, and art for the primary- and secondary-school English language and culture curriculum. Research may consider the assessment and analysis of teaching resources, the use of translations and adaptations, and the benefits of teaching through performance to investigate ways of encouraging a wider use of drama at all education-, skill-, language-, and age-levels.

The candidate will work closely with the Shakespeare in Education Research Group and its international collaborators and contribute to seminars, workshops, and conferences. Research areas may include any of the focus areas of the research group including teacher\student resistance to using drama, dramatic adaptation or translation into film, graphic novels, and animation, performance-based learning through live theatre, student performance, or digital theatre, modernization, or simplification of drama for younger, or developing, readers, or teaching drama through popular culture including visual arts, music, and dance.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 491 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years, including 25 % teaching duties.Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Educational Sciences, Specialization Teaching Profession and School Research, within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
