Qualification Details

To possess basic eligibility, the applicant should hold an advanced degree, have completed studies equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, at least 60 of which at an advanced level, or in some other manner have acquired skills that are equivalent to this requirement. To meet individual eligibility requirements, an applicant must have satisfactorily undertaken courses within Business Administration equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits, including an independent work (thesis/equiv.) worth at least 15 credits.

Selection among applicants that fulfill the formal requirements will be based on the applicant's perceived ability to succeed with the education, for example, considering the following:

  • previous academic results and ability to meet deadlines
  • methodological and scientific maturity
  • quality of research draft
  • communicative skills, both orally and in writing
  • ability to cooperate
  • individual personal suitability

When considering the individual suitability, we will consider in particular:

  • good analytical skills
  • good skills in English and Swedish
  • ambitions with the doctoral education and with work within USBE's unit of Business administration

It is also additional merit to have taken courses aiming at the project's central concepts/areas, have documented ability to write scientifically, and competence and experience relating to innovation studies. Since research is done in collaboration with different disciplines, good collaboration skills are required.

About the Project

The Ph.D. student will join a multidisciplinary research group at USBE, Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics ( The Ph.D. student will be part of the group’s research project to understand how technological innovations in Artificial Intelligence emerge within an innovation ecosystem. In the last two years, the research group has published in top-ranked journals such as the Academy of Management Review, Research Policy, Organization Studies, Business Horizons, and Journal of Management Inquiry. The research group is part of the section Entrepreneurship at the department of Business Administration.

As a Ph.D. student you should take doctoral courses, do an independent research project and contribute to the research environment through active participation in seminars, conferences, and other research activities that support the doctoral research and the research environment. The Ph.D. Student is also expected to actively participate in and contribute to the research group's projects. The doctoral education equals four years of full-time studies (240 ECTS). From the second year, the student may teach and carry out other school tasks which correspond to 20% of the working hours. Thus, the employment is thereby equally prolonged.
