Qualification Details

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Candidates with master degree in Food health, Bioengineering, Biomedicine and related areas are preferred.

Responsibilities/Job Description

This PhD position is aiming to investigate the potential beneficial effects of food symbiotics (probiotics and prebiotics) for the prevention of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). You will be associated with the Research Group for Food Production Engineering at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food), Division of Computational Science and Technology, (SciLifeLab), KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, and Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Responsibilities and qualificationsIn this project we will investigate the potential beneficial effects of food symbiotics (probiotics and prebiotics) supplementation during early prenatal life on gut microbiota composition animal behavior and associated changes in the brain activity dynamics, using a well-validated animal model of ASD. These studies will contribute to understand further how the food influences (during early life), can have a profound impact on brain development and later-life function.

The project will cover the following tasks:

  • Utilization of symbiotics to modulate the microbiome
  • Determination whether prenatal symbiotic intervention improves deficits in social behavior and repetitive behavior in mouse models of ASD.

Further, you will have tasks including:

  • Preparation of project meetings
  • Disseminate results at conferences and through scientific articles
  • Supervision duties of bachelor or master students
  • External research stay at KTH and KI
  • Attend PhD courses (30 ECTS)

Assessment The preferred candidate is ambitious, has a high motivation for research excellence and good command of written and spoken English.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge in:

  • Experience in food symbiotics (probiotics and prebiotics)
  • Experience with mouse behavioral assays
  • Experience with gene expression profiling techniques
  • Experience with microscopy, physicochemical and analytical characterization techniques,
  • Skills within statistical analyses of data
