Responsibilities/Job Description

The Department of Language and Literature at NTNU has a vacancy for a 3-year full-time PhD position to conduct research at the intersection of computational linguistics and experimental psycholinguistics, with a focus on semantics. In recent years, new approaches have emerged in computational linguistics for the analysis and generation of meaning in natural language. These approaches complement traditional theories in compositional semantics and offer prospects of integration with cognitive and neural models of language processing.

We aim to develop cognitively-plausible computational models of semantic processing and to test their implications using existing or novel experimental data sets. The PhD project will be specifically tailored to the skills and competencies of the successful applicant. One possible area of research is linguistic phenomena that challenge traditional approaches to compositionality and that involve the recovery and integration of implicit pragmatic or conceptual knowledge, such as forms of coercion, metonymy, and other instances of enriched semantic composition.

The candidate will be supervised by Giosuè Baggio (NTNU). The project is part of a collaboration with Alessandro Lenci (University of Pisa) and Emmanuele Chersoni (Hong Kong Polytechnic University).

For a position as a PhD candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. You will report to the Head of the Department of Language and Literature.

Duties of the position

  • Develop a PhD project proposal in close collaboration with the supervisors
  • Complete the required coursework (30 ECTS) as part of the PhD programme in Language and Linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities at NTNU (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phspraak)
  • Submit a doctoral dissertation
  • Perform and publish excellent research in the field of computational psycholinguistics
