Qualification Details

  • Completed a Master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) within the field of Social Science or adjacent fields with an emphasis on the PES implications of technology
  • The grade of the Master thesis must be B or better in terms of the Norwegian grading scale
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in EnglishFor international candidates (outside of EU/EEA area), approved TOEFL English proficiency test with min score 90 or IELTS test with min. score 7.5.

Emphasis will be placed on the following:

  • Prior academic and/or research performance
  • Prior relevant work experience (if applicable)
  • The applicant’s own ideas of research themes and research design that would be relevant for the project proposa

Responsibilities/Job Description

We are seeking to fund a Ph.D. student who will play a central part in the institutional strategic research initiative “The Digital Society”. Are you the one?

"The Digital Society" aims to promote interdisciplinary research activities on how digitalization transforms and affects society. It has a broad focus ranging, for example, from the development of digital solutions that may change and influence societal functions, to consequences of digital solutions on aspects such as health, learning, politics and organisational issues.

The Ph.D.-student will work on a project on the political, ethical and social implications of modern technologies, and will contribute to the development of unique knowledge about the digital society. At the same time, the Ph.D. candidate will participate in joint seminars and meetings to discuss and reflect upon academic issues, exchange experiences, and in so doing play a key role in building a strong and vibrant research culture in this area.

About the Digital Society

The student must propose their own project focused on the political, ethical and social (PES) implications of modern technologies. The research area of priority The Digital Society encompasses a wide range of reserach disciplines at the institution, such as healthcare, education, economics, information technology, engineering, and social science. The project must have a broad scope aimed at developing unique knowledge potentially relevant to these disciplines. The main goal should be to strengthen the evaluation of the PES implications of new technologies in all fields. The student will ideally focus on one or several of the following technologies: big data and AI, social robots, or virtual and augmented reality. These research areas are relevant for all the faculties at the institution, and the student will consequently be able to develop a key role in strengthening the evaluation of the PES implication of these technologies. The student is encouraged to describe how the project will strengthen the social science basis of The Digital Society, and how they evaluate the potential usefulness of their own project for other reserachers at the institution.

About the Employer:

Admission and appointment

Currently ØUC does not offer a Ph.D.-programme. Consequently, the selected candidate must be admitted to a Ph.D.-programme at another institution. The application process will be assisted by the Faculty of Computer Sciences, Engineering and Economics.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the State Employees law, the act relating to Universities and Universities Colleges and the national guidelines for appointment as a Ph.D. student, a postdoctoral fellow or a research assistants.
