Qualification Details

The successful applicant must hold (or finish) a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar.

We are looking for top motivated candidates, and some practical experience with the following will be an advantage:

  • Organic synthesis and characterization of small molecules and polymers
  • Knowledge on polymers and hydrogels
  • Knowledge on characterization of hydrogels e.g. rheology
  • Practical experience with 3D-printing or cell cultures will also be seen as positive but is not a requirement

Furthermore, we expect:

  • Good collaboration skills, team spirit and the ability to work independently
  • An excellent level of both spoken and written English to accommodate scientific communication and dissemination

Responsibilities/Job Description

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a PhD stipend/Integrated PhD stipend is available within the PhD study programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 September 2022 or soon hereafter. The stipend is available for 3 or 4 years depending on whether the applicant already holds a master’s degree. Applicants who hold a master’s degree can apply for a 3-year position and applicants who has finished 4 years of full time studies but do not hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 4 years PhD stipend (Integrated PhD stipend). The Integrated PhD stipend is only open for appointment with starting date 1 September 2022. The Department consists of two sections with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Technology and Biology. Place of employment of the position is Section for Chemical Science and Engineering in Aalborg. The Section of Chemical Science and Engineering consists of 80 people of which about 20 is associate- and full professors. The section conducts internationally competitive research within a range of topics within Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and publishes more than 80 peer reviewed publications annually. The section is responsible for the educations in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and is located in both campus Aalborg and campus Esbjerg.

JOB DESCRIPTION

A PhD stipend is available with the provisional title “Modular hydrogel for 3D printing of artificial tissue”. The research project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and is part of our endeavors to construct novel materials to solve challenges within tissue engineering. Close collaboration with partners at Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University and Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Aarhus University is an integrated part of the project.

The project concerns the design of a modular multifunctional hydrogel suitable for 3D-printing and development of living artificial tissue. The emphasis of the project lies on synthesis and characterization of the modular building blocks for the hydrogel system and characterization of the resulting hydrogels with a keen eye to 3D-printability and the ability of the printed and cured hydrogel to sustain cell growth.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time. Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who have not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme. The integrated PhD stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU=The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6.397 kr. (2022 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
