Qualification Details

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in civil engineering, materials science, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Candidates with a proven background in experimental mechanics and a keen interest in fatigue crack growth in heterogeneous materials will be prioritized.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering (DTU Sustain) invites applications for a PhD scholarship in the fields of experimental mechanics and fatigue testing, starting from October 1, 2022.

This project aims to understand the basic mechanisms of fatigue in heterogeneous materials to enable a physics-based approach for modelling and characterization. We will achieve this aim seamlessly integrating in situ x-ray microtomography, novel digital volume correlation techniques, and innovative finite element and multiscale modelling approaches to assess the evolving 3D displacement and strain fields at various length scales. The project will thereby have a significant impact on the field, predicting the emergent behaviour of heterogeneous materials without resorting to phenomenology but rather directly unravelling the micro-mechanical origin of macroscopic behaviour.

The successful candidates will join an ambitious international research team and gain access to world-leading research facilities, such as the Villum Center for Advanced Structural and Material Testing (CASMaT) as well as the 3D imaging centre (3DIM) at DTU.

Responsibilities The PhD study will be involved in the following tasks:

  • investigate structural changes during the fatigue damage process at the micro/mesoscale and relate these to the stress-strain relation at the macro-scale
  • conduct low-cycle and high-cycle fatigue tests under monotonic, cyclic fatigue loading in compression to investigate the fatigue damage process at the micro-, meso-, and macro-scale systematically
  • characterize the fatigue damage process at the various length scales, novel techniques and tools will be complemented with traditional (destructive and non-destructive) measurement techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, acoustic emission, conventional strain measurements, and surface DIC.
  • utilize various measurement techniques to relate the influence of macroscopic fatigue deterioration on crucial material properties and material behaviour of cement-based materials
  • study the influence of the size effect on the fatigue behaviour and the corresponding fatigue damage process by performing fatigue tests on specimens with varying dimensions
  • participate in the teaching and dissemination activities of the department.
