Qualification Details

We are looking for candidates within the field(s) of sustainability science focusing on food systems sustainability assessment. Applicants can have a background from industrial ecology,  environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, food chemistry, or food technology. Systems understanding and knowledge of / experience in industrial ecology modelling tools such as Substance and Mass Flow Analysis (SFA/MFA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and/or Input-Output modelling is and advantage.

The PhD programme

A three year full-time study within the framework of the regular PhD programme (5+3 scheme), if you already have an education equivalent to a relevant Danish master’s degree.

Qualifications needed for the regular programmeTo be eligible for the regular PhD programme, you must have completed a degree programme, equivalent to a Danish master’s degree (180 ECTS/3 FTE BSc + 120 ECTS/2 FTE MSc) related to the subject area of the project, e.g. industrial ecology,  sustainability science, environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, food chemistry or food technology. Terms of employment in the regular programme Employment as PhD fellow is full time and for maximum 3 years.

Employment is conditional upon your successful enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of SCIENCE, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

The terms of employment and salary are in accordance to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State (AC). The position is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Responsibilities and tasks in the PhD program

  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision
  • Complete PhD courses corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS / ½ FTE
  • Participate in active research environments, including a stay at another research institution, preferably abroad
  • Teaching and knowledge dissemination activities
  • Write scientific papers aimed at high-impact journals
  • Write and defend a PhD thesis on the basis of your project

Responsibilities/Job Description

This PhD project is part of the several Food Science projects; among others the EU project FoodRUs (An innovative collaborative circular food system to reduce food waste and losses in the agri-food chain) and MASSPROVIT (Making microalgae a sustainable future source of proteins and vitamins) funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

The goal of the PhD project is to perform system level assessments of the market entry of emerging technologies utilizing food waste and side-streams of the existing food supply chain, thereby solving global societal challenges associated to the current food system. The PhD will

  • contribute to further development of modelling concepts and tools to quantify nutritional and environmental sustainable food production and consumption
  • contribute to or perform process-based LCA of existing and future food technologies
  • contribute to or perform hybrid-LCA and EE-MRIO modelling of the global economy with a special focus on either food sectors

About the Department/Section/Group

You will be part of an interdisciplinary research environment applying different research disciplines to adress sustainable innovative in food science combining all dimension of sustainability in the design of environmental sustainable and innovatie food systems.  We work with the utilization of unexplored raw materials, novel ingredients and bioactivity in the design of health-improving functional foods. Lastly, we integrate environmental and nutritional life cycle assessment of innovative food processes applying green chemistry principles, while aiming at zero waste food supply value chains.
