Qualification Details

A Master's degree in a relevant field should be obtained by the application deadline (e.g., language, communication, linguistics, social work, etc.). Applicants with a master's degree from other subjects who can document good knowledge of the topics in the announcement evidenced in their master's thesis, for example, will be considered qualified.

Applicants should enclose a project description of up to five pages that presents and provides a basic theme with anchoring in the research literature in the field, self-chosen problem, and choice of theory and method for a potential project. This project description is used to assess the qualifications of the candidate and will not be the final project description. The final project description and plan for the completion of postgraduate education will later be formulated in consultation with supervisors when applying for admission to the doctoral program.

The following qualifications will be given special emphasis:

  • L1(first/native language) proficiency in a signed language
  • Professional qualifications within the advertised area, with emphasis on quality in the master's thesis
  • The preliminary project sketch
  • Fluency in one or more signed languages
  • Experience from teaching or documented teacher training. If the candidate does not have teaching experience or at least 5 credits in pedagogy, this requirement should be met within the duration of the PhD.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Professional qualifications within the advertised area, with emphasis on quality in the master's thesis
  • The preliminary project sketch
  • Fluency in one or more signed languages
  • Fluency in English

Responsibilities/Job Description

The PhD position is aimed at the HVL and the faculty’s commitment to sign language and sign language interpreting.

The PhD position is linked to the project "Signed Language Depiction as an Engine for Promoting Inclusion, Communication, and Translation” funded by Research Council of Norway (https://www.hvl.no/en/research/prosjekt/depict/). The main goal of the project is to empirically investigate depiction and what role it has in communication practices within sign language interactions.

The PhD fellow’s project and doctoral dissertation will focus on a relevant topic related to iconicity and depiction in signed languages, bilingualism, or second language acquisition of signed languages.

The period of employment is three years. The PhD fellow will be part of the academic environment within sign language and interpreting at HVL, the research group ‘Sign Language Interpreting and Communication’, and the strategic research program ‘Language, Communication and Learning’ (SKoL). In addition, the candidate is expected to complete the PhD project within the set fellowship period. The research fellow will have his/her place of work/affiliation with the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports at Campus Bergen.

Main duties and responsibilities:

In addition to completing the PhD project it is expected that the candidate:

  • Participate in the research group ‘Sign Language, Interpreting and Communication’ and the DEPICT project
  • Present project results at conferences, co-author publications, and share results through popular channels.
  • The candidate is expected to participate in the PhD program ‘Studies of education and didactic practices’ at the Faculty of Education, Arts and Sports during the employment period and must be qualified for admission to the PhD program within three months of hiring.

  • A CV with a complete list of academic publications
  • Diplomas and certificates

 

Applicants should indicate which publications or parts of publications should be given special consideration in the evaluation. If the documents submitted are not in a Scandinavian language or in English, the applicants must submit certified translations of these. The transcripts must specify the topics, the course works, and the grades at the bachelor`s and master`s degree levels.

Applicant whose education is from another country than Norway, need to also attach a certified translation of the diploma and transcript of grades to English or a Scandinavian language, if the original is not in any of these languages. It is required that the applicant enclose a review from NOKUT whether the education (bachelor and master’s degree) is of a scope and level that corresponds to the level of a Norwegian master’s degree.

Initial salaries will be offered at grade 54 (code 1017) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale.
