Qualification Details

Doctoral degree or equivalent academic qualifications with knowledge in economics and/or health economics.

Educational competence will count positively. Applicants who do not have documented basic university pedagogical competence must acquire this within two years from appointment.

Documentation of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration will count positively.

Good communication skills both written and oral in English and Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) are a prerequisite for performing all the tasks associated with the position. Applicants who are not competent in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish must acquire such competence within two years subsequent to their appointment, and must be competent in English in the interim period.

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:

In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications shall be considered, assessed and explicitly ascribed weight. Particular emphasis will be attached to applicants' scientific publications during the past five years and that are closely related to the area in which the post is advertised. Hiring procedures are regulated in "Rules for appointing Professors and Associate Professors”.

Responsibilities/Job Description

HELED is a multidisciplinary department, consisting mostly of economists, social scientists and medical doctors, and conducting research in the fields of health economics, health management and health policy, and public health. HELED is organized in four research groups (see website).

The department is responsible for PhD training, the teaching of medical students in quality, leadership and knowledge management, and four discrete study programs: a bachelor’s degree program in Health Management and Health Economics (taught in Norwegian), two master’s degree programs; (both taught in English), and an executive master’s degree program in Health Administration (taught in Norwegian).

  • Cover letter (statement of motivation, summarizing scientific work and research interest)

  • Overview of experience in supervising PhD candidates, including names of the candidates, period of supervision, information on institutions and dates for the presentation of the theses, as well as specific information regarding experience as main- or co-supervisor for each candidate
  • Description of qualifications in dissemination, management and administration
  • A future research plan describing the applicant's scientific ambitions for the position and integration into ongoing research/teaching activities at the department. See the Department’s research groups here

Interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants will also be required to give a research seminar for the Department and possibly also a trial lecture for the Department’s students.

About the Department

The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.

The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master’s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty’s medical school and PhD-program. We employ about 220 FTE and have almost 700 Bachelor and Master students. Annual income is about 200 mill NOK, half of which is external funding. Our researchers play an active part of public policy and disseminate new knowledge through many channels.
