Qualification Details

We encourage applications from a broad range of fields and experiences. You have knowledge and experience in software engineering and data science, acquired through an M.Sc./Ph.D. in a relevant field or work experience. Likewise, you enjoy building and using semantic data models, (non-)relational databases, and ETL systems. ORD and FAIRification practices are your friends. You are great at understanding infrastructure designs and eager to propose improvements. Coding in Python or R, workflow orchestration, and automation should be your passion! You are ready to learn about and become familiar with tools and trends which will enable you to excel in your work. We also value previous experience or curiosity about best practices for information security, especially safe harbor privacy principles for sensitive data. Finally, you love communicating with diverse stakeholders to scope work. You are confident in influencing collaborators through clear written and spoken English (with bonus points for French and/or German).

Responsibilities/Job Description

You will join a diverse spectrum of SDSC projects to drive the adoption and implementation of Open Research Data (ORD) practices. These projects are often multi or interdisciplinary and involve both internal and external collaborators. Onboarding collaborators in research communities that may not necessarily be familiar with the ORD practices will form a key part of this role.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

This role sits within the Open Research Data (ORD) Engagement and Services team within the SDSC, with scope across the organization in academic, industry, or governmental projects. These projects frequently involve multiple institutions, and individual partners will have varying technical expertise and familiarity with ORD best practices. You will enable ORD ways of working and ensure the continuous delivery of project objectives. As SDSC projects can be ambiguous and technically complex involving communities with different maturity levels, the Open Research Data Engineer should flexibly introduce new ORD concepts and tools while amplifying the existing successful ORD practices. An essential aspect of the role is co-creating innovative solutions that support communities throughout their ORD journey.Another key focus is Renku (, an open-source SDSC platform for reproducible and collaborative data science. As an Open Research Data Engineer, you will work with developers and product analysts to help identify and solve blockers related to technical development.
