English language proficiency is a must and a written test, as well as a scientific presentation, can be part of the interview procedure.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The vibrational spectrum of water changes when water molecule become so closely confined that their movement is restricted and the regular coordination of the hydrogen bonds becomes disrupted. Strong confinement is expected for the water in between the myelin layers that surround healthy axons but as the axons swell, the confinement is lost.

The aim of this PhD research is to use the water spectrum to reveal early small changes in the swelling of neurons at the onset of Multiple Sclerosis. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with A. Luchicchi and G. Kooij of the VU Amsterdam where brain tissue will be collected and prepared and further proteomics and biochemistry will be studied.
