Qualification Details

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in mechanics, fluid mechanics, physics or applied mathematics. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the completed defence of the doctoral thesis being approved.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Personal skills

  • Good social and collaboration skills and ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary scientific environment

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Post-doctoral fellows will:

  • Develop MD simulations code/continuum models for fluid wetting an elastic/viscoelastic solid
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team with expertise in mechanics, physics and material science.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

About the Project

The position is part of the project “Dynamic wetting on soft solids” funded by the Research Council of Norway. Many biological and industrial processes involve a fluid displacing another immiscible fluid over soft solids such as biological tissues and gels. Current experiments have shown some fundamentally different dynamical wetting phenomena on soft as compared to rigid solids. The goal of the project is to develop a ground-breaking theoretical model that incorporates both viscous flow in the liquid and the viscoelasticity of the soft solid. For this position, the post-doc will work on characterizing the soft wetting at the nano-scale by molecular dynamics simulations/continuum models. We aim to describe nano-scale and finite size effects as well as help clarify the local boundary conditions at the contact line.

About the Department
