About the Project

This project is broadly aimed at elucidating the importance of the immune cells, and the micro-environment to which they are exposed, in orchestrating successful stem-cell based bone tissue engineering. Emerging evidence suggests adaptive immunity plays an important role in this process and needs to be understood in order to improve the efficacy of bone regeneration. A particular subset of the adaptive immunity called regulatory T lymphocytes (Treg) have gained interest due to their critical potential on endogenous regeneration, which remains unexplored. This functional communication between the implanted mesenchymal stem cells and Treg will be utilized to advance current stem cell expansion conditions and to design next generation regenerative therapies.
