Qualification Details

Essential:

  • MSc degree (to be completed before the start of the position) or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as molecular ecology, ecological genomics, population genetics or related disciplines.
  • Grade average of B or better both for the programme in total and the master’s thesis
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Drylab skills in molecular biology (e.g. DNA extraction, PCR)
  • Strong computational skills (using R or Python, Population genetics analyses, bioinformatics analyses, and other relevant programmes)
  • Demonstration of strong interest in and drive to work on the topic
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • High motivation and adherence to time lines

Beneficial:

  • Experience in biological oceanography / plankton ecology
  • Experience with pteropods / morphometrics

The faculty is international with English as a common working language. Applicants who already have a PhD in life sciences are not eligible.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Shelled pteropods, a group of holoplanktonic gastropods are used as bio-indicators to monitor impacts of ocean acidification.  This project will focus on population genomics of the pteropod Limacina helicina, a widely distributed and highly abundant species in polar and subpolar regions. This project will focus across their entire geographic distribution on: 1) phenotypic and genomic variation, 2) spatial partitioning of variation in relation to oceanographic variables, 3) relative importance of neutral and adaptive processes in shaping this variation.
