Qualification Details
This master thesis could be conducted as part of several different master programs as the research project is situated between academic disciplines. Matching master could be Human Geography, Sociology or Political Science.
However, the master student needs to have capacity for quantitate/statistical analysis. The software that will be used in the project is: R, ArcGIS and GIS-FME. Any proficiency in these programs will useful, it is but not a requirement.
Responsibilities/Job Description
The purpose of the larger project is to provide the municipal housing companies in Gothenburg (Framtiden) with analyses of development in the multifamily building stock in relation to their strategy of reducing segregation and investing in disadvantaged areas in Gothenburg. This will be done by developing methods of studying the built environment using national building-specific information. By comparing compiled information from Framtiden and from different authorities about all buildings, it is possible to evaluate the result of investments and governance tools in decreasing segregation.
The master student will have access to building specific information about the Swedish national building stock. Using this information and the interests’ of Framtiden in reducing segregation in Gothenburg, a master thesis will be designed between the master student and supervisors at RISE.
Furthermore, additional aspects of the larger project are: The customer satisfaction surveys of Framtiden, the relationship between segregation indicators and the police list of disadvantaged areas (utsatta områden), the legal aspects of public housing companies making investments disadvantaged areas, and comparable investments (previous and current) in disadvantaged areas.

Project preference The work can start from autumn 2022 or spring 2023 (flexible arrangement possible).
The master thesis project will be supervised by Katarina Haugen, Mikael Mangold, Guilherme Chihaya and Tim Johansson. This master thesis can be carried out at any university, but the project staff is situated at RISE in Gothenburg.
