Qualification Details

An applicant who has received a Degree of Doctor or has the equivalent academic expertise shall be qualified for this appointment.

Priority shall be given to a person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or achieved equivalent academic expertise no more than five years before the deadline for applications for employment as  assistant professor. A person who has been awarded a doctoral degree or has achieved equivalent expertise at a previous date may, however, be considered in special circumstances. Special circumstances is here used to describe: sick leave, parental leave, and other similar circumstances.

Responsibilities/Job Description

An assistant professor’s duties may comprise educational responsibilities or research, and administrative tasks. Teachers are also responsible for monitoring developments within their subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant to their role as a teacher at a higher education institution. The holder of the appointment will participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels.

The successful candidate will primarily be engaged in research and PhD supervision. Assuming a separate decision from WASP the position comes with financing for own salary and expenses for 4-5 years, plus salary and expenses for two postdocs (2+2 years) and for two PhD students (4+4 years). The holder of the position is expected to build a new research group and engage in WASP’s graduate school, WASP national meetings and other activities. The holder of the position is also expected to actively engage in applying for external research funding and to establish an own independent research group. The duties include also approximately 20 percent teaching.

For this position, the language of instruction will be Swedish and English. The duties presuppose the ability to communicate freely in English.

About the Project

The Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever; a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment (see WASP comprises five Swedish full partner universities and a substantial part of Swedish industry and commerce. The WASP initiative includes among many instruments an international recruitment program and the present announcement aims to strengthen Linköping University specifically in the field of machine learning within the AI focus-area of WASP. Specifically, the goal is to complement the existing excellence in areas of Computer Vision (Michael Felsberg), Visualization and Data Sciences (Jonas Unger), and Statistics and Machine Learning (Fredrik Lindsten).

For this purpose, we are looking for competence in Machine Learning with particular emphasis on methods, algorithms, and mathematical analysis relevant to the alignment and integration of physical and virtual worlds. The focus is on research and development of methods and mathematical tools with the aim of better understanding the theories and processes within statistical and deep learning-based systems.

Possible research questions should match one or more of the focus areas 1) augmented reality, 2) data augmentation, and 3) hybrid modeling. Examples of suitable research topics include, but are not limited to, model integration and simulator forcing, multi­dimensional alignment, and uncertainty representation, estimation, and propagation. As an assistant professor, you are also expected explore application areas of this research, e.g., within planning and simulation of smart homes, self-driving cars, or traffic flow planning. Depending on the profile of the successful candidate, the affiliation will be with the Computer Vision Laboratory (CVL) at the Department of Electrical Engineering, with the Division of Statistics and Machine Learning (STIMA) at the Department of Computer & Information Science, or with the Media and Information Technology (MIT) Division at the Department of Science and Technology.

Form of employment

An assistant professor may be employed until further notice, for a minimum period of four years and a maximum period of six years, as determined by the institution of higher education before the employment begins. The employment may be renewed, by a maximum period of two years, if, as a consequence of sick absence, parental leave, or other special circumstances of the research fellow, additional time is necessary in order to achieve the purpose of the employment.The length of employment for this position is fem years.An assistant professor shall, after application, be promoted to senior lecturer if he/she is qualified for employment as senior lecturer and has been assessed following a test to be suitable for such employment according to the grounds for assessment that the institution of higher education has determined. The grounds for assessment are stated in the Rules of Appointment of Linköping University, p 4.3 (LiU-2021-01204)
