Qualification Details

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher in the specialisation Paintings conservation, someone who is always curious to know more and enjoys guiding the students in their development towards becoming a conservation professional. The ideal candidate likes to take on responsibilities that help ensure the quality of our education programme, working in close collaboration with the rest of the team.

Your experience and profile

  • Certified training in paintings conservation at internationally recognized academic programme at level of Master’s degree or higher;
  • Advanced experience and skills in the field as a paintings conservator, preferably in a position that includes  some research;
  • preferably experience with teaching in Master programmes at an academic level, specifically in the field of Paintings Conservation;
  • a PhD in a relevant area is a plus, but is not a requirement for this position;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Capacity group C&R;
  • enthusiasm and ability to cooperate in multidisciplinary projects;
  • good administrative experience and skills;
  • excellent command of both Dutch and English. Non-native Dutch speakers must achieve an active and passive command of Dutch within two years of employment. Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to attain this within two years.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The capacity group Conservation and Restoration is looking for a lecturer to teach in the Masters and Advanced Professional Programme (APP) of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, specifically in the track Paintings Conservation. As an eligible candidate, you will have been educated as a Paintings conservator-restorer at an academic level and have gained substantial experiencing working as a conservator in the investigation and treatment of easel paintings . Furthermore, your CV must demonstrate your interest and capacity for teaching this specialisation at an academic level.

What are you going to do

Together with the other lecturers within the Paintings specialisation, you will be responsible for the MA and APP education of conservators in this track, guiding them in the development of academic and practical knowledge and skills with inspiring lectures and workshops, developed according to the latest scientific and scholarly insights. Depending on your profile, your duties may include teaching within other specialisations, such as technical Art History.  Also,  teaching general courses in the areas of ethics, science, documentation or / and reconstruction is an option. Together with the other Paintings Conservation lecturers, you will also teach an introduction to paintings conservation in the BA minor programme Conservation and Restoration. In the MSc and APP programmes, you will supervise student conservation treatments, research projects and internships, including the investigation of objects using  various techniques (such as microscopy, UV and IR examination, X-ray based techniques). Furthermore, you will contribute to the renewal and improvement of the curriculum, as well as the acquisition of suitable learning objects.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • co-developing, coordinating, and teaching courses in object-based, hands-on classes within the MA and APP programme in Paintings Conservation and in the minor Conservation and Restoration, in collaboration with the staff of the section of conservation and restoration and especially those within the track Paintings Conservation; teaching in other specialisations, especially in Technical Art History will be an option;
  • co-supervising and mentoring student research (including Master and APP theses), internships and hands-on conservation projects;
  • keeping track of relevant scholarship and integrate the latest insights into teaching;
  • playing an active role in the development and implementation of improvements and innovations in course pedagogy and content;
  • carrying out administrative and management tasks, for instance co-organizing and coordinating of guest lecturers involved in the programme;
  • up-keep and maintenance the Paintings Conservation laboratory;
  • building client relations with regard to internships and acquisition of objects for student hands-on sessions and research;
  • serving on department and university committees, participating in department and university events, and advancing the department's public outreach initiatives;
  • attending team meetings;
  • performing administrative tasks that go with teaching.

About the Employer:

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of 1 year with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for minimum 11,4 and maximum 17,1 hours a week. Preferred starting date is as soon as possible.

The gross monthly salary, based on 38 hours per week and relevant experience, ranges between €2.846 to €5.230. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
