HDK-Valand’s academic programmes in design are based on a holistic perspective on design, focusing in particular on the shared creative skills at the core of all design. Our activities and organisation have an artistic and creative basis. We have created design programmes that dissolve the boundaries separating traditional design areas. Our students can transcend boundaries and delve into artefacts and services in a broader overlapping design field. This includes environments, processes, structures and systems in a post-disciplinary spirit, where great emphasis is placed on social and societal aspects of design.
HDK-Valand also has a doctoral programme in design and is actively working on building a research environment. We also provide free-standing courses in design.
Subject area description
At HDK-Valand, design as a subject integrates practice-based, theoretical and societal issues into design and design practice. We focus on design as an artistic transformative practice as intrinsic in various social, cultural, economic and technological contexts both now and historically. This spans knowledge development about design work by reflective practitioners from an inside perspective to discussion and theory formation about design activities.
We use a holistic approach to design work and artistic skills that characterises our education and research. This approach is independent of design specialisations and creative areas but has a clear societal and humanistic profile, where responsibilities and ethical standpoints are important, such as global and intersectional perspectives.
In our increasingly diverse and multicultural society, we note that high expectations on design and design processes and what they aim to achieve, how they go about it, who they are for and, above all, what impressions they make. This gives rise to questions of participation, co-creation and transdisciplinarity that challenge design and its methods, processes, roles and tools, such as ethical/artistic practice. We regard the subject of design as something that develops in interaction with education, research and society as a whole.
Design, specialising in Embedded Design:
The Master’s programme Embedded Design combines organisational knowledge and artistic design in a collaborative process. A student in the programme learns to use design as a tool to create sustainable solutions in an integrated process together with organisations. The concept of Embedded Design alludes to the designer’s role in the work process. In contrast to many more traditional forms of the design practice, the Embedded Design Master’s programme provides students with an opportunity to develop a more integrated, and collaborative, approach to design. This is done by acquiring the knowledge and tools needed to work with an organisation from within, the designer can gain an understanding of complex systems and serve as a bridge between disciplines. Collaboration is, also, a major focus of the course content. Companies, organisations and other departments at the university contribute to an interdisciplinary perspective and enrich the education through collaborations, lectures, workshops and real project case studies.
You will be part of the teaching staff working on Bachelor’s and Master’s design courses and conducting research. As a lecturer, you are involved in teaching, supervising, administration and various forms of development work, and you will be expected to be an active contributor to the workplace. Master’s education is given in English.
You will be responsible for working together with others to promote an outward-facing, societally active organisation and for developing and problematising design and the role of the designer from an artistic perspective. The work includes a focus on knowledge acquisition, methods/processes, participation/co-creation, sustainable development, gender/norm criticism and global challenges.
Design’s practical aspects, especially through design of what is contemplated and communicated through form, are integral to HDK-Valand. HDK-Valand offers the student the opportunity to consistently have an artistic focus throughout the programme through conscious selection of projects. We take a process-oriented human-centred approach.
We are looking for a person who is confident, curious and sees opportunities rather than obstacles.
