About the Department/Section/Group

The research of the NMR group aims at gaining fundamental insight into biological processes. For this purpose we use solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy as the main biophysical experimental techniques, in combination with molecular biology and computational structural biology. New research concepts are being developed and applied to complex biomolecular systems, including protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes or membrane proteins. The group houses 10 NMR spectrometers that are regularly refilled with cryogens.

Our group consists of scientific staff, support staff (including the technicians and the secretariat), 35-45 young researchers (PhD students and postdocs), as well as students who are temporarily guests that learn in our group how to do research. The group is very diverse and international. The NMR group is part of the Bijvoet Centre for Biomolecular Research. This research institute is part of the Faculty of Science.

At the Faculty of Science, there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us.

At Utrecht University we work together towards a better future for all of us. With more than 7,000 employees, we provide socially relevant research and high-quality education. The university is an actively involved part of society, with the added value of our open view on social issues. We collaborate with other (international) universities, the business community, governments, the cultural sector, and societal organisations.
