About the Department

The positions are being offered within the broad field of social/cultural anthropology, as we seek to attract top-level candidates who can contribute to the further development of the thriving research and educational environment at the university’s Department of Anthropology by either strengthening existing research foci (see below) or expanding the department’s profile in new directions. We are seeking candidates with excellent and well-documented core anthropological research credentials, including experience and expertise gained through long-term ethnographic fieldwork, an outstanding publication record, and the documented ability to attract external funding and nurture international collaboration. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to provide academic leadership relating to research, education and academic development, as well as contributing actively to the further development of the department both nationally and internationally. A distinct advantage will be a strong interest in (and experience of) talent development and the nurturing of young scholars, as well as capacity building with international partner institutions.

In the application, applicants should explicitly present their vision for the development of research and research training in the field of anthropology, including a research plan for the next five years. This plan should stipulate how the applicant will expand and/or complement the existing research specialisation at the department.Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time available to the applicants, so any career breaks or periods of leave should be specified in the application.

Applicants should be prepared to teach and contribute to the development of courses and teaching plans, and willing to give supervision at all levels of the degree programmes in anthropology (BA, MA and PhD), and will be expected to have considerable teaching and supervision experience at university level. Applicants should also be able to contribute to other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society.

Talent development

The department values its large (and growing) population of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, and wishes to sustain its focus on emerging research. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to have experience of and the ability to identify, attract and develop the work of junior scholars, and to contribute to the talent development and supervision of PhD students and postdocs and the creation and teaching of PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange

It is expected that the successful applicant(s) will engage in knowledge exchange and dissemination with society as a whole, as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, collaboration with civil society and/or the public dissemination of knowledge in the media. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange, including attracting funding and documenting proactive efforts in relation to potential stakeholders in the world of research/knowledge.
