Project: Hypomineralization in enamel is a porous enamel that is visible as opaque areas or uneven tooth color on parts of the tooth surface. The diagnosis of hypomineralization is based on etiology but differs histologically, as well as clinically, in appearance. The diagnosis of hypomineralization is thus important and significant during the care and continued choice of treatment. Hypomineralization is seen in around 20% of the population, and has a demand to treat these hypomineralizations from an esthetic perspective. The teeth and the smile are seen to be significant for the individual’s self-rated, oral-related quality of life. Resin infiltration (RI) is a micro-invasive treatment, first developed to stop initial caries (subsurface lesions). The resin infiltrates into the less mineralized area below the intact surface layer of the enamel, filling in porosities. One effect that RI provides is improved esthetics in cases with superficial hypomineralization. Whitening of the teeth with hydrogen peroxide is an accepted method that gives brighter teeth and a more homogeneous tooth color. The doctoral project and its aims include investigating how hypomineralization affects individuals concerning esthetics and self-esteem, assessment in regard to oral health-related quality of life, and evaluating the esthetical treatment for hypomineralization. Furthermore, to study the subjective experience and objective results with treatment for hypomineralization in the short and long term.

It is desirable that the applicant has experience of practise as a general dentist. Documented experience of diagnosis of hypomineralisation seen in teeth is advantageous, as well as shown interest for the subject of pediatric dentistry.
