Qualification Details

  • Master's degree or equivalent education in media and communication, or other relevant subject area
  • The MA degree or equivalent must be obtained, and the final evaluation must be available by the application deadline
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, see Language requirements
  • Personal suitability and motivation for the position.

To be eligible for admission to the doctoral programmes at the University of Oslo applicants must, as a minimum, have completed a five-year graduation course (Master’s degree or equivalent), including a Master’s thesis of at least 30 ECTS. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission based on a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study program’s scope and quality.

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the project's originality, quality and relevance to the research that takes place at IMK.

In addition the following will be considered

  • The applicant’s academic and personal ability to complete the project within the time frame
  • Results from the master's degree and the master's thesis
  • Knowledge of theories and methods within the relevant field of research
  • Ambitions to conduct high-level research
  • Good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities
  • The applicant’s desire to join the research networks at IMK
  • Publications in journals or at conferences

Responsibilities/Job Description

IMK is an interdisciplinary department, including social scientific, humanistic and technological perspectives on media and communication.

The research fellow's project must be innovative and relevant to the research that takes place at the Department of Media and Communication, within the area “Children, youth and media”.

The research area is considered broad and is open for approaches from both social sciences and humanities. Relevant research areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Media use and media effects
  • Digital rights and democratic participation
  • Media, media technology and media content for, or produced by, children and adolescents
  • Media panic and societal concerns of how media affect children and adolescents
  • Digital risks, such as digital bullying, sexting, privacy violations, hate speech and commercial pressure
  • National and international media politics and regulations that affect children and adolescents
  • Globalization, technological innovation and platformization
  • Digital parenting
  • Digital skills

Applicants are encouraged to contact the relevant research group for more information. The appointed candidate will be part of a larger interdisciplinary, international research environment at the Department, with the option to participate in larger, international collaborative projects.

The appointment is for a duration of 3 years. All PhD Candidates who submit their doctoral dissertation for assessment with a written recommendation from their supervisor within 3 years or 3 ½ years after the start of their PhD position, will be offered, respectively, a 12- or 6-month Completion Grant.

The appointed candidate must apply for admission to the organized research training at the Faculty of Humanities.

The academic work is to result in a doctoral thesis that will be defended at the Faculty with a view to obtaining the degree of PhD.  Read more about the doctoral degree.

About the Department

The Department of Media and Communication's (IMK) main purpose is to conduct research, education and dissemination on the modern media, their importance for society and for people. IMK has approximately 50 employees, including 10-12 doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows. There are around 500 active students on different levels. The department offers one-year study program on the Bachelor's level and a Bachelor's degree in media and communication, in addition to Master's degrees in Media Studies, Journalism, Political Communication and Screen Cultures. IMK is a multidisciplinary department, based on the academic traditions of the humanities and social sciences. The department is ranked as one of the top 50 media and communication departments in the world (QS Ratings).
