Qualification Details

The dean of the faculty must have successfully defended their doctoral thesis and hold, at the minimum, associate professorship in a subject area relevant to the faculty’s activities.

Other requirements include:

  • Experience of leading research and education in a subject area relevant to that of the faculty
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully leading and developing academic activities in the form of academic management, leading of major research projects with financial responsibility, or leading of boards and steering groups
  • Documented good experience of collaboration with different actors in society, required in the development work of the faculty’s collaboration in research and education
  • Documented experience of international collaboration in research and education
  • The ability to express oneself in both Swedish and English

Documented experience of increasing student participation and involving students in the development work of educational quality is considered as a merit.

As dean, you must have experience of working with issues related to work environment, recruitment and finance, in close cooperation with administrative support staff. It is also beneficial to have experience of research and education in a multidisciplinary environment, and you must have a good understanding of the Swedish education system and research policy issues.

Experience of structuring and coordinating collegial processes and decisions is desirable, as well as the ability to enable others through coordinating rather than controlling. Creating good relationships, being responsive and having good communication skills are important prerequisites for good leadership.

As dean of the Faculty of Culture and Society, your commitment to the independent role of the fields of social sciences, humanities and arts in the open society is valuable.

Responsibilities/Job Description


As dean you will be responsible for the faculty’s activities and will lead the strategic work through academically and collegially inclusive leadership, in accordance with Malmö University's strategy. You will lead the work in close cooperation with the faculty’s heads of departments, who are responsible for the activities of individual departments. The dean is responsible for ensuring that the faculty’s resources are used efficiently, and that equality aspects are taken into account.

As dean of the Faculty of Culture and Society, you have a particularly important role in creating good conditions for the development of third-cycle education, (as well as) academic culture and quality.

The University’s deans are part of the Vice-Chancellor’s Management Group. The deans report directly to the Vice-Chancellor and are members of the Faculty Board, which is a collegiate body led by an external chair. The Vice-Chancellor’s Management Group has joint responsibility for the University’s development and cohesion.

The faculty is divided into three multidisciplinary departments: the Department of Urban Studies, The Department of Global Political Studies and the School of Arts and Communication. Additional information

The dean is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor. The assignment is full-time for the period of 01/01/2023 – 31/12/2025, with the possibility of extension for a further three years. The assignment allowance is paid according to the Vice-Chancellor’s decision LED 2020/31.
