Project descriptionThe Nippon Foundation-GEBCO-Seabed 2030 project started in 2017 during the UN Ocean Conference in New York with the goal that all the world’s oceans should be mapped by the year 2030 ( As of today, approx. 25% has been mapped, which means that there are huge areas of the world’s oceans where the bottom topography is not known! Four regional centers started, each of which handles the depth data compilation within an assigned part of the world’s oceans. At the Department of Geological Sciences, we are responsible for compiling depth data from the Arctic Ocean. Depth data comes to us in various formats and quality. These data need to be reviewed and processed before being incorporated into the global depth model that Seabed 2030 produces for GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean: ( The depth model is in the form of a digital grid. It is used by tens of thousands around the world, including for map production in GIS (Geographic Information System), basis in various types of numerical models, and in Google Earth and Google Maps.
