Scientific Software Developer or Data Scientist (80-100%)

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

At the Environmental Chemistry department, we have an open position for a

Scientific Software Developer or Data Scientist (80-100%)

for the development of a mass spectrometry data exchange platform

You will develop a platform for processing and interchange of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) data for Swiss water stakeholders (environmental agencies and drinking water production companies). The platform will be developed in direct collaboration with the stakeholders and applied for comprehensive monitoring of Swiss water resources in practice.

The project will involve designing an appropriate data and metadata structure, implementing and adapting a data processing workflow into a data management system, and developing appropriate search and visualization interfaces. Depending on project progress and individual interests, further developments could include e.g. statistical data evaluation or identification of environmentally rele-vant compounds.

We are looking for an individual with a master or PhD degree in natural sciences or bioinformatics with strong affinity to IT, or a computer scientist with interest in natural sciences, specifically mass spectrometry. You have solid experience in one or more programming languages (for example R or Python, but others possible) and standard tooling such as Git and Docker, and at least basic understanding of SQL. You have first experience building user interfaces for scientific applications, for example with web UIs (Shiny/Dash or HTML/CSS/JS webdev), scientific data management sys-tems (e.g. LabKey, openBIS) or scientific workflow managers (e.g. Airflow, Nextflow, Snakemake). Most importantly, you are comfortable with quickly learning, combining and applying established and new technologies to solve upcoming challenges. Ideally you have some experience in mass spectrometry data processing and/or environmental analytics, and are aware of the challenges and pitfalls in this area.

The successful candidate should be fluent in English (written and spoken) and ideally German.
