Challenge: Design new algorithms for next-generation automotive radars in multi-user environments.
Change: Use advanced techniques from multi-dimensional optimization, distributed signal processing, and machine learning.
Impact: Enable situational awareness in dense radar environments.
Automotives in next-generation vehicular networks will be equipped with advanced communication and multi-modal sensing capabilities. Existing radar sensing solutions, however, are not designed to leverage this connectivity and sensing infrastructure. The PhD project will address this gap by developing advanced signal processing algorithms that make the best use of the available infrastructure.
The PhD candidate will work on distributed signal processing on radar data using the communication backbone network. The goal is to exploit vehicular connectivity to enhance perception in mixed traffic conditions where vehicles have varied sensing capabilities.
The candidate will be embedded in the research group of Dr. Geethu Joseph and will have close collaboration with colleagues from the section Circuits and Systems and the department Microelectronics within the Faculty of EEMCS at the TU Delft and the Faculty of 3mE. The PhD candidates will also work in close collaboration with industry experts from NXP.

You should have:
- A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems & Control, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, or any field related to the lab’s research topics;
- A background in applied mathematics, particularly, linear algebra and probability;
- A solid understanding of statistical signal processing and optimization;
- A background in radar and wireless communication is desirable, but not mandatory;
- An experience in programming e.g., Python, MATLAB, R
- A good command of English (verbal and written);
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
Doing a PhD at TU Delft requires English proficiency at a certain level to ensure that the candidate is able to communicate and interact well, participate in English-taught Doctoral Education courses, and write scientific articles and a final thesis. Conditions of employment
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2541 per month in the first year to € 3247 in the fourth year. Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three disciplines – electrical engineering, mathematics and computer science. The department Microelectronics (ME) focuses on microelectronics, microfabrication, signal processing, radar, and microwave systems. The research is clustered in three main themes: Health and Well-Being, Next-Generation Communication and Sensing, and Autonomous Sensor Systems. The department’s activities are highly multi-disciplinary, involving innovative combinations of device physics, material science, and chemistry, on the one hand, with signal processing, circuit, and system design, on the other. They are also multidisciplinary about their scope of applications, as they play a crucial role in nearly all fields of innovation, ranging from advanced health care to telecommunications and smart grids.
