Description of the workplace

MultiPark is a strategic research area at Lund University and conducts both experimental and clinical research regarding neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. At the present MultiPark consists of about 50 research groups, whereof around 50% are experimental and the other 50% clinical research groups. More information regarding MultiPark can be found here

MultiPark finances several technical research platforms both consisting of equipment and personnel. These platforms offer services to researchers and research groups who need to use the different techniques for specific research projects. The MultiPark financed research platforms important for reaching our strategic goals and perform excellent research.  Work duties and areas of responsibility

MultiPark offers funds to finance a position as a research engineer to an electrophysiology platform. As research engineer in an electrophysiology platform, you are part of a team with employees from MultiPark and Stem Cell Centre with whom you collaborate daily. In the position supported by MultiPark, you are responsible for providing support to various research groups in their specific projects. Your duties mainly include the following elements:

– Meeting research groups to give advice regarding which type of electrophysiological analysis will be best to use to answer specific research questions.

– To maintain a workstation for patch-clamp electrophysiology including all technical parts.

– Be responsible for the booking system for the workstation and calculate user-fees.

– To suggest technical improvements (upgrades the instruments, including adding new functions when needed).

– Prepare slices of fresh brain from rodents for electrophysiological registrations and/or stimulation according to the protocol best suited for the project at hand (ethical permits for animal experiments is provided by the research group).

– To do registrations and analyze data as agreed with the research group whose experiment it is.

– To analyze data and present it graphically.

– To, when needed, be able to help with single cell electrophysiology registrations.

– To, when needed be able to help with morphological analyses of the nerve-cells registered from.

Other duties could occur, most likely:

– Instruct student that would like to use the platform.

– Take part in scientific meetings and other events organized by MultiPark.


Requirements for employment are:

– Have a PhD and/or PostDoctoral training in a neuroscience with a mayor part being electrophysiological methods, or in a electrophysiological area with a strong direction towards neuroscience.

– More than one year experience of patch-clamp elecrtophysiology done on ”slice-preparations”.

– Technical and theoretical knowledge on how ion-channels and synaptic influx will contribute to the electrophysiological properties of nerve-cells.

– Very good knowledge in using suitable soft-ware and methods for analyzing and extracting relevant electrophysiological data from the registered signals.

– experience of microscope-techniques.

– willing to work with rodents for scientific purposes.

– personal characteristics as easily collaborates with others, is flexible, and service minded, capable to solve technical difficulties when needed, well organized (able to approximate how long time something will take and keep to the schedule).

Additional qualifications for the position are:

– Experience with imaging techniques on slice-samples such as calcium imaging.

– Experience in different techniques for programming.

– Knowledge regarding using optogenetics on slice-preparations.

– Capability to work with people with different backgrounds.

– Capability to work under stress.

Further information

The position is a fixed term position for one year at 75 per cent of full time and starting in 1th of September 2023 or by agreement, although not beyond 31th of August 2024.
