A person qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise. Primary consideration should be given to a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise within five years of the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, a person who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered if there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Equal attention will be given to the applicants’ teaching and research expertise.
Desirable qualifications in descending order of importance
- Proven teaching experience in bioarchaeology/human osteology as well as archaeozoology/animal osteology (80%)
- Familiarity working with scientific methods used in the field of archaeological research (20%)
The subject of historical osteology includes the study of skeletal material from humans as well as domesticated and hunted animals found while conducting archaeological investigations. This source material helps us answer questions about where and how humans lived in the past and their cultures. The education we offer is both practical and theoretical, while also placing great emphasis on ethical perspectives. Historical osteology has applications in the other subjects offered at the department. Osteological methods are also used in geology, biology, odontology, veterinary medicine and human medicine. The study of historical osteology therefore has close scientific ties with these disciplines and is thus cross-disciplinary in nature. Internationally, historical osteology corresponds to two disciplines, namely biological anthropology and archaeozoology.
The position involves teaching and research, at least 50%, in the subject of historical osteology. The position will provide opportunities for career advancement within teaching and research. Emphasis will be placed on research advancement first and foremost. An opportunity for five weeks’ training in teaching and learning in higher education will be offered in connection with the appointment if the candidate has not already completed this training.
Teaching includes course responsibility and course administration as well as the supervision of theses. The duties also include actively applying for external research funding, as well as developing their own research in the subject.
Associate senior lecturer is a position that shall provide opportunities for teaching and research qualifications. The position shall first and foremost provide scope for developing research qualifications. The scope of the position shall also provide an opportunity for training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to at least five weeks.

About The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology
The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have around 700 employees and around 4000 students.
The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at Lund University is one of the oldest and largest archaeology departments in Sweden, and one of the top 100 in the world according to the QS World University Ranking. We provide a lively environment for research and teaching and have done so since 1805.The department covers four subjects: Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology, Historical Archaeology and Historical Osteology. The subjects cooperate with each other, while having different backgrounds with respect to history of ideas and are working partly with different source materials, methods and theoretical perspectives. This is the department’s strength from both a research and education perspective. Fixed term appointment, four years, according to Chapter 4, Section 12 b The Higher Education Ordinance with possibility for promotion to senior lecturer. The University applies individual salary-setting.
An associate senior lecturer can apply during their period of employment to be promoted to an indefinite-term position as senior lecturer if she or he is qualified for such a position and is also considered suitable when assessed in line with the qualification requirements and assessment criteria below. Applications can only be made once and should be submitted to the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology six months before the position ends at the latest.
For appointment as a senior lecturer, the individual must have:
- been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve,
- demonstrated teaching expertise,
- completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means
General assessment criteria: the degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.
Additional requirements for promotion
For promotion, the applicant must be qualified to the extent that they meet the requirements for appointment as an associate professor in accordance with the guidelines of the Joint Faculties of Humanities and Theology and they must also have applied for and been awarded external research funding in competition.
For employment as senior lecturer the following is specifically required:
- a good national and international standing as a researcher,
- good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,
- an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students to achieve a PhD,
- an ability to cooperate with wider society and to communicate his or her activities as well as otherwise leading and developing activities.
