Qualification Details

Qualified to apply is a person who has defended his/her doctoral thesis in building technology, or in other way has acquired the equivalent scientific skills. Primarily a person should be considered who has defended his/her doctoral degree or acquired the equivalent competence no longer than five years before the expiration of the application period. Also, a person who has defended his/her doctoral thesis or acquired equivalent competence at an earlier stage may be considered if there are special reasons for this. Special reasons refer to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances. (HF, chap. 4, section 4a).

Qualification for this position also requires documented experience in experimental research relevant to the position, as well as research in the field of mechanics of materials and structures or structural engineering. Good oral and written communication skills in English are a requirement.

Assessment criteria:

In addition to the formal requirements described above, experiences in teaching in building technology, and especially in structural engineering are considered as a merit. Documented international experience from research work in national / international research projects is a merit and must be reported in the application. Ability to work together in research groups or with external research partners, the ability to work independently and structured, as well as the ability to prioritize tasks will be assessed. Experience in leadership and the ability to teach in Swedish are also merits.

In the overall assessment of the applicant’s skills and competences, special emphasis is placed on the applicant's potential for a successful career as an academic teacher and researcher, as well as the ability to create sustainable work relationships and collaboration.

Linnaeus University values the qualities that an even gender and age distribution as well as ethnic and cultural diversity add to the university.

Promotion criteria:

For promotion to senior lecturer and a permanent full-time employment, the following criteria will specifically be assessed in addition to the general eligibility requirements for a senior lecturer:

  • The ability to independently plan and implement research projects, apply for research funding and write scientific publications
  • Formal pedagogical qualification with higher education pedagogical and supervisor training.
  • Pedagogical merit through teaching, development of courses, pedagogical development at basic level and advanced level, as well as course responsibility or responsibility for essential parts of courses.
  • Collaboration with other researchers and/or application experts in neighboring areas for the development of the field of knowledge.

The expectation is that the applicant can teach in Swedish within a two-year period

Application for promotion must be made no later than 6 months before the end of the employment period as associate senior lecturer, but no earlier than 12 months before.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Field of subject for the appointment: Building technology with specialization in hybrid and composite structures

Placement city: Växjö, Sweden

Scope of appointment: This is a full-time position (100%) for four years. The appointment may be renewed, however for no longer than a total of two years, if more time is required to fulfil the purpose of the appointment because of the associate senior lecturer’s sick leave, parental leave, or other specific reasons.

Job description:

The associate senior lecturer will be working with research and teaching. The main part of this position concerns research in the area of hybrid and composite structures.

This may include research in the field of composite action in structural elements, where materials are combined in different ways with rigid, semi-rigid or flexible joints, and in hybrid structures with structural elements of different materials. The research aims at identifying properties of materials, structural elements and building structures and is based on numerical models and experimental investigations.

A special interest lies in the combination of timber with other construction materials. The research shall among other design issues include the long-term behavior and the influence of moisture content, shrinkage and creep in the constituent materials on the stiffness and load-bearing capacity of such composite structures and structural elements.

Work tasks even include application for external research funding, as well as publishing research findings in international scientific journals and at conferences. Pedagogical merit shall take place through teaching at the basic and advanced level and through the development of courses in the fields of structural analysis and structural engineering. Examples are a possible new course on Composite Structures or teaching in the course Conceptual Structural Design. The formal pedagogical development of the associate senior lecturer takes place through basic higher education pedagogical training and supervisor training. The supervision of project and thesis works is a natural part of the position. Administrative work related to the described tasks can be included.
