Qualification Details


  • An MA degree in political science, economics, sociology, or a relevant field
  • Extensive research experience
  • Fluency in Chichewa or Chitumbuka (written and spoken)
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)


  • Experience in conducting and analyzing qualitative case studies, focus groups, household surveys and/or elite interviews
  • Knowledge of and experience with quantitative methods and data analysis
  • Experience in writing publishable academic articles and/or reports and policy briefs
  • Experience in presenting research results
  • Previous participation in large-scale research programs and projects
  • Experience working internationally or with people from different cultures
  • Understanding of poverty traps and/or community resilience

We are looking for a candidate who is flexible and well-organised and comfortable working individually and in a team.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • Assist with background research and literature reviews
  • Assist the Program Director with the design and implementation of preliminary fieldwork, community case studies, focus groups
  • Assist in drafting questions and conducting interviews with development practitioners, government officials and other elites
  • Assist in development and implementation of survey questionnaire
  • Assist the Program Director and Head of Data in developing analysis plans
  • Perform exploratory analyses on data
  • Draft policy briefs and assist in drafting academic articles
  • Present findings
  • Supporting other team members with research and administrative tasks as needed.

The work tasks will vary by proportion and content.

About the Department

The Department of Political Science has an open climate which encourages involvement in broader societal debates. Research areas of specialization include elections, democracy, corruption, governance, globalization, environmental politics as well as European studies. The department houses research programs such as QoG institute, Center for Collective Action Research (CeCAR), Varieties of Democracy (V- Dem), Governance and local development (GLD) and The Swedish Election Studies Program. The department offers education on all levels; undergraduate, graduate and PhD, carried out in both English and Swedish. We have a total of 1,300 students enrolled in our courses, and 140 people are employed at the Department. The Department is centrally located in the city of Gothenburg.

The Department of Political Science and GLD are seeking a research associate to work with two new projects: one which examines subnational variation in crisis response, with an aim to understand how individual and community factors have affected governance and outcomes in response to the Covid-19 crisis, and a second which explores the impact of international aid on poverty. Both projects will be implemented in Malawi.
