Qualification Details

You must formally qualify for a position as an associate professor within university pedagogy in accordance to the requirements set out in the Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions.

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications should preferably be in university pedagogy, adult learning, pedagogy, educational science, philosophy, or sociology, but can also be from similar relevant disciplines.
  • If you can document that you are close to the final phase of your PhD education, your application may be considered.
  • You can clearly show how your previous research is relevant to university pedagogy as a field of research, development, and education
  • You have an ambitious and clear plan for how you will contribute to the further development of the university pedagogical field locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Good oral and written presentation skills in a Scandinavian language and English.

The position will be advertised alternately as a qualification scholarship for a period of 2 years, in accordance with the Act relating to universities and university colleges, § 6-5, item 1 and 2.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university level, cf. Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions. If you are unable to document this, you will be required to complete an approved program in university pedagogy within two years of employment. NTNU offers a qualifying program.

If you do not master a Scandinavian language, it is a prerequisite that you can within three years demonstrate knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language in line with level three in the course Norwegian for foreigners at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • Teaching, supervision, and course responsibility at all levels within university pedagogy
  • Plan, implement and further develop teaching, supervision, and assessment
  • Supervise bachelor and master students and doctoral candidates in university pedagogy
  • Conduct research within university pedagogy
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research and development work, publishing, and general dissemination, locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Take care of the department's academic responsibilities together with the rest of the section
  • Pedagogical guidance across all academic environments at NTNU
  • Contribute to evaluation and strategic work
  • Administration related to education and research, such as course and study program management and management of research projects, committee, and development work

The person hired has to adhere to decisions about changes that the development at the department and in the academic environment entails, as well as organizational changes. The academic environment at the department is interdisciplinary, and the work tasks require collaboration between colleagues at the department and the institution in general. Your immediate manager will be the Head of Department.

Group work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a group project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Master’s supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. About the Department/Section/Group

The Department of Education and Lifelong Learning (IPL) is situated in the social sciences and is a leading teaching and research environment. The department contributes research-based knowledge that cover upbringing, school, education and working life in a lifelong perspective. The department's core disciplines are pedagogy, adult learning, counseling science, university pedagogy and childhood research. The advertised position is linked to university pedagogy.

The activities at the Section for University Pedagogy mainly focus on the following four areas: 1) Research on higher education and university pedagogy and advance the international research front; 2) Pedagogical competence development program for everyone with teaching assignments at NTNU; 3) Pedagogical guidance of individual teachers and disciplinary environments, especially in connection with pedagogical development work; 4) Advice in connection to strategic work at NTNU. With its foundation in pedagogy and through its portfolio, Uniped contributes to quality development of teaching, guidance, learning and assessment, as well as to realizing NTNU's vision that all education should be characterized by quality of high international level.

Through the announced position, the department wants to further develop a joint responsibility for all these areas. The person hired has to participate in research groups and projects, contribute expertise in working groups and committees, and be part of a teaching and pedagogical supervision team. The position will contribute to strengthening the department's dissemination of research-based knowledge across NTNU and society in general.

Salary and conditions

A position as Associate Professor (code 1011) will typically receive a gross salary of between NOK 594 300 - NOK 715 900 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2 % of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
