Qualification Details

Project management is usually defined as consisting of project planning and control, project organization and design, and project leadership. At the Operations Management section we primarily focus on the last two.

The criteria described in the Faculty guidelines  for the assessment of academic competence for Professor positions or Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Management, NTNU, have to be fulfilled.

To qualify for the position as Associate Professor, we require:

1)      A Norwegian PhD or equivalent international PhD in the area of Project Management.

2)      Documented scientific competence in at least two of the following four areas:

  • Projects as temporary organizational structures and teams
  • Project portfolio and program management
  • Projects in multiple organizational- and inter-organisational contexts
  • Projects as instruments for change, learning, and development

Applicants must explicitly document the relevance of their research experience and their publications related to the above areas in the application letter.

3)      Publication of research in relevant project management scientific journals. It is presupposed that the main research profile falls within Project Management Scientific articles published in the last five years (not counting statutory leave period) with relevance for the research areas indicated above will weigh strongest in the evaluation and ranking. We desire an active researcher to fill this position, and we consider the scientific publication record in light of the length of the applicant’s academic career, including the length of the PhD studies.

4)      Demonstrated skills in qualitative social science methods.

5)      Documented experience in university-level teaching. See more about the pedagogical qualifications below.

It is considered positive for the evaluation and the ranking if some of the following qualifications are met:

I.       Experience with supervision at master and/or PhD level

II.      Documented experience in initiating and managing research projects

III.     Collaboration experience with industry and/or public sector

IV.     International collaboration experience

V.      Demonstrated skills in application of mixed research methods

VI.    Willingness to collaborate with other engineering disciplines  and experience with such work

To qualify at the full professor level, we require all of the above-mentioned requirements 1-5 for Associate Professor in addition to the desired qualifications I-IV.

Candidates who have recently defended their dissertation, along with candidates who have submitted their dissertation for the evaluation committee at the time of application, but not yet defended, are encouraged to apply.

Other requirements

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal, basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to complete an approved course within two years of appointment. Pedagogical qualifications will be evaluated. The evaluation will be based on documented pedagogical material, pedagogical education, skills from presentations of scientific work, experience from PhD or master level supervision, and other kinds of teaching and pedagogical experience. The overall level of the qualifications will be evaluated.

It is a prerequisite that, within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU. The University provides such courses. After three years, the candidate should be able and willing to teach and do research in Norwegian.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management (IØT) invites applications for a permanent position as Professor in Project Management.

Do you have ambitions to conduct research in a strong, international group within Operations Management?  Do you want to educate engineers in Industrial Economics and Technology Management with outstanding skills within Project Management? Then we hope that you will apply for this position at our Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management.

We recruit new employees who are passionate about contributing to the department’s vision “More research, interaction and cooperation which increases our value creation at the interface between technology/natural sciences and business economics, management, and HSE”. We are looking for you who have experience with and potential for continuous innovation at this interface.

The department is organized into six sections:

  • Managerial Economics, Finance and Operations Research
  • Health, Safety and Environment Management (HSE)
  • Strategy and Business Development
  • Operations Management
  • Experts in Teamwork
  • Economics and Management (NTNU Gjøvik)

The position is part of the Operations Management section. This is a cooperation-oriented section with several internationally recognized researchers who are active in many national and international research projects and programs, financed by for example EC H2020 and the Research Council of Norway. The section cooperates closely with both industry and governmental bodies.

The staff teaches in the 2-year international Master of Science program Project Management (PROMAN), the 5-year Master of Technology program in Industrial Economics and Technology Management (INDØK) and the Bachelor program in Logistics Engineering (INGLOG), which are all managed by the department. The section also teaches courses in other master programs at NTNU.

The position reports to the Head of Department of IØT.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Research in the scientific area of project management, resulting in publications in internationally acknowledged journals within the field
  • Initiate, participate in, and manage externally funded research projects
  • Contributing to, fronting and leading the development of the research area Project Management
  • Teaching in the scientific area of project management on a bachelor, master and PhD level in all the study programmes taught by the section, with a specific focus on the study program in Project Management
  • Taking part in managing and developing the study program in Project Management
  • Supervision of bachelor, master and doctoral students
  • Exam preparation and evaluation
  • Administrative tasks

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 630 000,- to NOK 900 000,- per year, depending on competence. For Associate Professor (code 1011) the salary is normally from NOK 600 000,- to NOK 731 000,- per year, depending on competence. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The total work obligation is divided into research, teaching and administration. The division between these fields of work obligation will vary, but approximately equal time should be devoted to research and teaching.

The person appointed must comply with decisions on changes due to developments in the subject area or due to organizational changes that may result from decisions regarding the university's activities.

Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite. The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the department.
