Qualification Details

  • you have completed a PhD in Behavioral or Social Sciences
  • you have experience in supervising PhD students and post-docs
  • you have a track-record of high-quality scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • you have advanced methodological and statistical knowledge and skills
  • you are a team player who is able to lead and collaborate with other researchers in acquiring external funding for research in the field of Clinical Child and Family Studies
  • you have teaching experience and have an efficient and inspiring teaching style
  • you have a basic qualification academic teaching (UTQ, the Dutch BKO) or are committed and able to obtain qualification within the first year
  • you have excellent written and oral skills in Dutch or are committed and able to obtain Dutch C1 level within the first year (requirement for teaching)
  • it will be considered a plus if you also have experience in developing and coordinating courses in (applied) methods and statistics for behavioral sciences, incorporating emerging trends, workflows, and tools in Open Science.

Responsibilities/Job Description

The department Educational and Family Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam invites applicants for an Associate Professor position in the Section Clinical Child and Family Studies. The teaching and research activities of this Section provide relevant insights in family functioning and interventions in the fields of youth care, education and care for people with disabilities. Research themes focus on the development of caregiver-child relationships, parenting, attachment, wellbeing and identity development in family self-settings as well as care and support settings. The basis for our research lines, designs and methodology is the shared idea, grounded in several developmental theories, that social relationships and interactions are crucial for healthy development. Part of the research takes place in structural collaborations with organisations in the field of youth protection and care for people with disabilities, the so called Academic Collaborative Centers. As an associate professor in Clinical Child and Family Studies, you will contribute to research (50%) and teaching (50%). Your research will be embedded in two interdisciplinary research institutes: Amsterdam Public Health and LEARN!.

Your duties

  • Develop a line of research in synergy with the thematic focus of our team
  • Collaborate with new or existing partners to achieve societal impact of our research
  • Contribute, based on your expertise and line of research, to our bachelor, masters, and research program courses
  • Coordinate a bachelor-level course in methods and statistics in the behavioral sciences
  • Supervise bachelor and master theses ​​​​​​

The Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences focuses on the broad domain of behaviour and health. Our teaching and research programmes are devoted to current developments in society, from healthy aging to e-health, from juvenile crime to dealing with depression, from training for top athletes to social media as a teaching tool. We are unique in that we combine three academic disciplines: psychology, movement sciences and education.

An engaging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €5,275 (scale 13)and a maximum €6,421 (scale 13), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 18 months. Upon good performance, according to the faculty’s performance indicators, the position will become permanent after 18 months. Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:
