Qualification Details

  • You have a PhD degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related field and affinity to nanobiology / biophysics / biochemistry / quantitative cell biology.
  • You are a passionate and dynamic teacher.
  • You have an (academic) teaching qualification or are willing to acquire one quickly.
  • You are enthusiastic about, and have knowledge of and experience with, didactic innovations in education. You are passionate about implementing such innovations in your teaching and that of the programme.
  • You are collegial, have strong communicative qualities to both students and colleagues, and have management and leadership skills that enable you to grow into management positions within the educational organisation of TU Delft.
  • In your academic career, you want to combine education and research, with an emphasis on education.
  • Your research expertise in computational biology fits within the department of Bionanoscience of the faculty of Applied Sciences.

TU Delft is a bilingual organisation. Although an excellent command of both Dutch and English are necessary for optimal performance, a less than perfect command of the Dutch language does not have to be an obstacle to a successful application. We support further development of the Dutch or English language. Teaching in the Nanobiology program is entirely in English.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Excellent education is one of the central objectives of TU Delft. Within the faculty of Applied Sciences, we are therefore hiring scientists with a passion for education. These new colleagues will primarily focus on education, next to performing scientific research. We are looking for a colleague in the field of computational biology / bioinformatics, who will contribute to the program in Nanobiology, and potentially also to the faculty's other programs Life Science and Technology, Applied Physics, and Molecular Science and Technology.

  • As an assistant professor with emphasis on education, you will primarily play a role in the faculty's educational process. You will initiate and contribute to educational innovation that enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of education and its impact on students, lecturers and society.
  • In your teaching, you emphasise the links to societal and technological developments and to current scientific research.
  • You are enthusiastic about the latest didactic insights and evidence-based teaching methods. You make well-considered use of these findings in organising your teaching and you test the effectiveness of the innovations introduced with the aid of data.
  • You contribute to a collaborative educational culture and an inspiring student-teacher community. You value direct contact with students and are accessible to them. You guide and coach colleagues in their development into good teachers and educational developers. You promote a supportive and inclusive culture for every student and colleague. You make connections between different subjects and with different teachers within the curriculum. You take a leading role in the (re)design of education and assessment.
  • In addition to your teaching duties, you will actively participate in research within the department of Bionanoscience. You will participate in current research projects (possibly in cooperation with other universities or industry), (co-)supervise PhD, master and bachelor students in their research, publish or contribute to publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings in your field, and acquire new projects. You are not expected to set up your own line of research or to acquire funding for it.

In this position, the emphasis is on providing, renewing and developing high-quality, cutting-edge education within Nanobiology, in particular in courses on computational biology, bioinformatics and programming.

Department of Bionanoscience

The Department of Bionanoscience focuses on the fundamental understanding of biological processes, from the level of single molecules to the full complexity of living cells. This research provides fascinating insight in the molecular mechanisms that lead to cellular function. Furthermore it enables the in vitro bottom-up construction of cellular machinery and it impacts applications ranging from biomolecular diagnostics to novel antibiotics and targeted nanomedicine. The department features a strongly multidisciplinary and international team of scientists, whose research areas include single-molecule biophysics, synthetic biology, as well as (quantitative) cell biology.
