Qualification Details

As our successful candidate you will have:

  • a PhD degree in architectural history;
  • thorough knowledge of the history of architecture in general and a proven specialization in the history of modern and contemporary architecture, as demonstrated by scholarly output (publications, conference papers, etc.), and the ability to contribute to at least one of the three axes of the art history section: transcultural, technical and digital. Preferably you also have some experience with public engagement;
  • experience in academic teaching at least on BA level, preferably also on MA level. You are able to teach on various levels, including our MA track on architectural history & heritage conservation (architectuurgeschiedenis & monumentenzorg). Teaching on BA level may also include general art history courses as well as architectural topics of earlier periods;
  • the ability to play a role in departmental management and contribute fully to the academic life of the department. Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) within two years if they are not already in possession of one. You are expected to be proficient in both Dutch and English. Non-Dutch candidates will need to master the Dutch language on an academic level within two years.

Responsibilities/Job Description

We prefer a candidate who can build bridges in teaching and research to architectural history in earlier periods (already consolidated in the department) to heritage and conservation studies, and/or to modern and contemporary art history, and/or to at least one of the three axes of the art history section: transcultural, technical and digital.

We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for a period of one year, starting 1 May 2022 at the latest. After a positive evaluation, the appointment will be made permanent. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience  - ranges between €3,807 and €5,922 (scale 11-12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
