Qualification Details

The candidate should:

  • Have obtained a PhD from an internationally recognized institution in Ship Design, Maritime Technology, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical engineering, Civil Engineering or other fields related to the knowledge areas;
  • Have a clear track record of high-end research as evidenced in part via their peer-reviewed publication record;
  • Demonstrate the potential to initiate, acquire, execute, and coordinate research projects. This includes a vision on how to develop a new, independent research line that is complementary to current research in the SDPO section;
  • Have a clear vision on modern engineering education. The candidate can inspire students and develop their passion for and knowledge of ship design, production, and operations. This includes the capability to define thesis topics and supervise bachelor, MSc, and PhD students;
  • Be motivated and have the ability to contribute to organizational tasks of the department such as outreach and valorization
  • Be proficient in English, and, for foreign candidates, the willingness to learn the Dutch language;
  • Have experience with the academic environment and are aware of inclusiveness values of TU Delft.


Responsibilities/Job Description

The Ship Design, Production & Operation (SDPO) research group is seeking tenure track candidates for assistant or associate professor to strengthen two of the department's main themes:

  • Safe Autonomous and Complex ships
  • Coordinated multi-machine transport and logistics.

It is the intention that the research areas of the candidate are applied to topics relevant for the Netherlands and broader European Union maritime industry. We see growing automation and energy transition challenges that apply to all ships from complex ships, such as superyachts, offshore vessels and naval ships down to inland ships and fishery and aquaculture vessels, which are all key industries in the Netherlands. This challenge covers all aspects of the ships lifetime (design, production, operations, economics, maintenance, refits, and recycling) and we believe that Systems Engineering can be a key factor in dealing with them from a design, production, and operational perspective. We are seeking a candidate to support these efforts and has a relevant knowledge background in the following (or related areas):

  • Systems Engineering
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering
  • Digital engineering
  • Engineering optimization
  • Design for production optimization

Please describe in your application how you would contribute to this challenge within one of our themes.

Responsibilities of the tenure track position include publication of peer-reviewed journal papers and acquisition of research funding. The candidate should be able to acquire funding for these projects through cooperation with the private sector, government and/or EU or Dutch national projects and research grants. A good network in academia, the private sector, government and research institutes is relevant. Practical experience within the maritime industry will be valued, as well as experience in teaching academic courses and supervising graduation research projects.

Another important responsibility is the development and teaching of one or more BSc/MSc courses and (co-)supervision of BSc/MSc students, project teams, design projects and PhD candidates. An additional portion of the position’s responsibilities is devoted to management activities such as participation in department and faculty committees.

A tenure-track position is offered for six years. In the fifth year we’ll decide if you will be offered a permanent faculty position, based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment. We expect that you have the potential to grow towards an Associate Professor and/or Full Professor role in the future.
