Qualification Details

You have completed a PhD in a topic that demonstrates the ability to think in fundamental concepts, develop new eco-technologies for processing secondary construction materials and model complex processes involving large amounts of data.

You should be comfortable with Process Engineering (in particular Separation technologies), Material Sciences, and Multi-scale modelling.

We expect you to have a clear style of communication of results to reach an audience with a varied background, including students. You are able to communicate with a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders (including industry partners) and develop the necessary skills for attracting funding for PhD studies.

A postdoc experience in recycling construction materials will be an advantage

Responsibilities/Job Description

Your are to develop new green construction materials from recycled products and predict their possible range of application and assess the circularity of the construction process and building materials by minimising the use and maximizing the reuse of entire buildings and/or building materials. Moreover, we expect you  to generate a fundamental understanding of the critical engineering factors for circularity in the design, build, maintain, operating and recycling cycle of constructions.

These factors include all engineering practices, i.e., (innovative) technologies and materials, information flows, regulations, and economic driving factors (working experience in the industry will be a plus).

You  shall aim to develop your own group of researchers, delivering research output that can guide relevant stakeholders in producing more circular constructions and form the basis of advanced engineering courses in this field.

Besides conducting research you will teach undergraduate and graduate courses and supervise graduate and undergraduate students.

About the Department/Section/Group

The Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) is committed to outstanding international research and education in the field of civil engineering, applied earth sciences, traffic and transport, water technology, and delta technology. Our research feeds into our educational programmes and covers societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, resource depletion, urbanisation and the availability of clean water, conducted  in close cooperation with a wide range of research institutions. CEG is convinced that Open Science helps to achieve our goals and supports its scientists in integrating Open Science in their research practice. The Faculty of CEG comprises 28 research groups in the following seven departments: Materials Mechanics Management & Design, Engineering Structures, Geoscience and Engineering, Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Transport & Planning, Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management.

The Department of Engineering Structures provides education and conducts research in the area of civil infrastructure and buildings. The department's approach is based on science/fundamentals (mechanics and material science), deepened by engineering (concrete, steel, composite, timber, road and railway structures) and broadened by design (integral design, construction design, zero-material design and design-build). The department provides basic education in the BSc civil engineering programme and three MSc programmes.

The Resources and Recycling (R&R) Chair is a highly productive research group with strong links to the minerals processing and recycling industry. The chair's ambition is to create breakthroughs in recycling by applying fundamental science to innovative processes and implementing them on the market in collaboration with the industry. The ongoing research projects combine theoretical insights and modelling with experiments in the group's laboratory and pilot plants.

R&R's main research activity is to envision innovative recycling processes for solid waste streams that are economically viable/competitive and close the loop with virgin-grade recycled materials. Scientific reviewed papers have awarded R&R's vision of circularity as in the top 3 or 5 of the world's most important views on circularity. Spin-outs from R&R's patent portfolios have reached a share value of 500 M€ to date, and one spin-out, C2CA Technology, has gained the 2021 EU Innovation radar prize for best sustainable technology.
