Qualification Details

  • completed a PhD in Computational Science or related discipline and two years of postdoctoral research experience
  • a strong international research profile in  Computational Science with a focus on Machine Learning or Large-Scale Computing as shown by publications in the top journals in the field of computational science or related field
  • academic teaching experience and experience in the supervision of MSc students; prior supervision of PhD students (to completion) is a plus
  • priority will be given to applicants who have successfully applied for research funding, either individually or collaboratively
  • priority will be given to computational science application areas within the molecular or health sciences (e.g. biomedicine, molecular biology, chemistry or biophysics)


We look for an active researcher in the Computational Science domain who either works with very large experimental data sets, and/or with computationally intensive simulations, with experience in AI and/or Large-Scale Computing. She/he will be responsible for adapting courses in AI and/or Large-Scale Computing for Computational Science students. Priority will be given to applicants who are working in application areas within the health or molecular sciences (e.g. biomedicine, molecular biology, chemistry or biophysics). The successful applicant will receive a  tenure track appointment.

Responsibilities/Job Description

  • performing research in the field of Computational Science, preferably with a focus on  either Machine Learning or Large-Scale Computing
  • supervising PhD students
  • coordinating two courses, you will adapt existing machine learning and/or Large-Scale Computing courses, such that they will be interesting for Computational Science students
  • developing new course material, in collaboration with the machine learning and/or large-scale computing experts in the department
  • supervising MSc students with research projects in  Computational Science
  • contributing to and writing research grant proposals contributing to administrative tasks in the group or department, in particular in the role of track coordinator of the MSc Computational Science

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,746 (scale 11)
and a maximum €5,826 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. The job profile: is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

This is a tenure track position; the initial appointment will be for a period of five years. Based on performance indicators agreed at the start of the appointment, a tenure track position will lead to a tenured position of associate professor 1 (scale 14)  in a period of maximally 5 years. In the fifth year of the appointment the tenure decision will be taken and a midterm review will take place in 2,5 years’ time after the starting date.
