Qualification Details

  • MSc degree in plant sciences or social sciences, with focus on both agricultural and international development;
  • PhD in one of the fields would be an asset but is not a requirement if you bring significant working experience;
  • 5 to 10 years of working experience, of which at least 3 years in an international environment, preferably in or with partners in (Western) Africa;
  • ability to support/lead the design and implementation of projects in the context of horticulture and/or seed sectors;
  • proven ability to implement capacity development processes and to facilitate learning and development of professionals with participatory and creative learning methodologies, including online;
  • ability to work independently and experience in project management;
  • a result oriented team player, who is also client oriented and stress resistant;
  • excellent communication and facilitation skills with a strong ability to work and communicate across boundaries/cultures;
  • willingness to travel (short missions);
  • proven track record in publishing, both reports as well as papers;

Responsibilities/Job Description

We seek for an experienced professional with hands-on experience in strengthening agricultural sectors in support of sustainable and inclusive food systems in Africa, possibly Asia and the Middle East. You will join our team working on transformation of the seed sector and horticultural sector. Our work portfolio at Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation contains short term and longer-term assignments within the domain of WUR: agriculture, food, and nature.Sector transformation is one of our value propositions. In our work, we aim to contribute to the transformation of agricultural sectors. We engage with stakeholders to guide a process to strengthen well-organised and professional producers, increase a market demand for the produce, develop well-established services along the value chain, and enhance governance structures. Dealing with the complexity of transforming sectors we apply a range of concepts, approaches, models and tools. Our work in agricultural sectors contribute to more inclusive and sustainable food systems.You will support project staff and partners in sector development programmes in project design, technical backstopping, facilitation of innovation processes and policy dialogues and action research. The focus is on the horticulture and seed sectors, as such you work in some multi-year national collaborative sector transformation programmes. In addition, you will facilitate the development of networks and strategic and effective partnerships with Dutch, international and local organizations in industry, government, civil society, farmer organizations, research and education. You will also facilitate training trajectories and develop training related materials, methodologies and tools. You will contribute to developing our international profile and portfolio of work. At our organisation, project implementation and capacity strengthening are closely intertwined and mutually reinforce each other. We expect you to work on both. Assignments take place in-country, primarily Sub-Saharan Africa, although much of our work is currently done remotely.
